Vice grips, strap wrench, sandpaper wrapped around the filter, screwdriver, your hands.

 

Jab a big screwdriver into it and use that as leverage to rotate the filter.

 

hmmm,

i tried "channel lock" but there isn't much room to move around in.

the kickstand is in the way. tried removing it but the bolts are on there tight too and i don't want to strip them either.

i haven't tried sand paper, ill give that a go


any specific tools that i can use for this.

 

What kind of filter wrench did you use? If you go to autozone or another similar parts store, they have these small oil filter wrenches that expand out to the size you need, you should use that instead. I beleive someone on here told me about those and i went out and bought one and have never had a problem since!

I'm with him. I did it one time but watch out is a very messy job. Prepare a lot and a lot and a lot of cleaning paper.

If you don't want to buy another filter wrench try this: wrap strip of large grit sand paper around the filter, face down, tighten a hose clamp down on the paper & use vice grips to turn the filter off. I have used this in the past & it works.

 

+1 for screw driver, i had to do that for my cousins 1st oil change....and get a k&n filter 17mm nut on the end

i have a similiar tool to the one mentioned above. its an actual yamaha part (i cant fine the part # right now)
sort of looks like this

i know the screw driver idea is ******* but it works.

this is what i did

i punched two whole on the front of the filter and stuck needle nose pliers (bigger ones) into them and tried to turn it counter-clockwise. that actually ripped the filter. so i just ripped the whole thing apart leaving the outer shell and the thicker metal piece (i guess this would be the back of it) with the thread on it. this piece has holes in it where the oil come into through. i put a needle nose pliers into the wholes and twisted it off.

now my oil change is done and im happy once again

i used one of those wrenches with a big jaw. filter came off real easy. I don't know what it's called but sorta looks like this.

I had stripped the edges and the filter was pretty much round before I got the tool from walmart.

 

the socket types rely 100% on the filter housing to hold up under the force applied to them, when the housing fails, the socket type wrench is 100% useless. (like a rounded off nut)

the wrench in my post tightens harder and harder as you apply force, it can't fail. It literally crushed my stock filter before it finally came off.

but no one seems to listen, most of you guys go on a use a screwdriver and pliers and getto rig some sand paper in a strap wrench that is a PITA to get into that confined area with, I laugh at you....
its like watching cavemen use a computer.

^^ That's what I do. Wrap sandpaper around the filter (folded with grit facing out on top and bottom) and use a strap wrench. Why you ask... because I'm cheap and that's what I had laying around my garage at the time. It has worked for the past four changes so I'm sticking with it.

Haven't tried the jaws of death that sepent is talking about, but they look like they would definitely do the job as well...

 

When you put your new one on, don't put it on so tight. They come from the factory way too tight. Its hard to describe what is tight enough, but a little tighter than hand tight is probably good. Experiment a little. Check the filter for leaks after a short ride and if needed go a little tighter until you get the feel. Easy to say - hard to get right, but after a few changes you'll get it. Then they will come off easier . Don't forget to put some oil on the filter gasget surface before putting the new one on.
