Suspension Set up 04 "Help Please.."

1981 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  thwwx
Hello everyone, I am the original owner of my 04, and became really really comfortable with the stock setup. I am a pure street rider and love tearing up through the mountains. I know that it is set up for around 150lb rider, But I am 210 lbs. Can I set up the stock susp. to suit me better? Or am I forced to start changing out parts. I have not yet played around with the rebound and compression of the bike. Should I just guess and check, or does someone have a set up that may suit me that I can tune from. Any help is appreciated.

You guys need stiffer springs front and rear, that's the bare min to even get things going. The stock springs on the 03~05 are good for up to 160ish lb rider.

Are you sure they are only good for 160lb riders? I am 192lbs and using the SportRider setup and I find my 2005 well sprung and, in fact, fairly stiff.
I am very interested on trying to setup my 02, but what tools do you need? I know you need a back shock preload tool , but what about the front fork pre load tool-what will work there?
you don't have one in your tool kit? you can order it from any dealer, look it up in the microfiche

yup, pretty sure. As u push your bike harder into corners, clearance issues will surface
check your sag, I weigh 230 and with the stock preload settings on my 05 r6 I have exactly 40mm front and 35mm rear of sag. Yamaha is not stupid, they set these bikes up for the demographic they are being sent to.

Yamaha puts only 0.85kg/mm springs for the 04 regardless where you are. This information is listed on the technical service manual. You can crank your preload till the sag numbers are reasonable, BUT, that does not change the spring rate at all. Incorrect spring rate results in dragging hard parts at lean when you shouldn't drag anything at all even in stock form.
