Noisy brakes

I was just wondering if anyone knew how to stop your brakes from screeching the last 15-20' of a stop. Just sounds like brake dust but I detail my bike once a week. It's a 2005 with 4000 miles. How long do brakes usually last anyways?

My rear brake squeals too, I have an '05 with about 5900 miles. It's had a noisy rear brake since maybe 3k miles. There's nothing wrong with the brakes, I think it's a design thing. The rear brake pads are only pinned on one end, the rear of the pads is free floating. I think this creates a lot of chatter when they're hot.

If your front brakes are squealing, that should be checked. My front brakes hiss like crazy, but they don't squeak. You can check the pad thickness with a flashlight, your owner's manual tells you how to do it.

As for how long the brakes last, I've got 5900 miles on my bike and the pads are maybe 50% gone.
I've got a back brake squel too with 4500kms on it, when i took it in to get it checked out he told me that everything was fine, it is very anoying though i must say

Okay I gotta ask, I just got new double H pads put on and SS lines on the front and just like the OP my brakes sqeek like crazy for the last 15 - 20' feet of a stop. I've already put on over 100miles with the new lines and pads and it still does it. Any suggestions? I just don't want to get to the track next month and have a sqeeky bike or worse yet, not pass tech.
got the same thing on mine too, checked the pads and they still got plenty of life left. rear does it noticeably more than the fronts. I got stainless lines on the front so Im not sure if that makes a difference.
A lot of factors play into squeaking brakes.

One cause is a slightly smaller pad size. Generally squealing brakes are caused by excessive pad motion. It also often happens that aftermarket pads are just a tad bit less precise than factory pads, and this gives the pads more free room to move. It's possible that, even with plenty of pad material left on the front pads and becuz the aftermarket pads are smaller, the pistons may still be retracting enough that, until they're pushed out farther and the pads have more bite against the rotor (i.e., for the first 20 or so feet of the stop while the pads are still moving in toward the rotor), the pads are chattering and squealing.

It could also be that the pads are made of a material that is simply prone to making a lot of noise. Racing brake pads are often very noisy and dusty because they're designed to be very high friction and dissipate heat very quickly. If you put performance pads on, this could be the case.

You might try some anti-squeak goop, sometimes that helps. Otherwise, maybe try an experiment and install a set of factory pads for a while and see if the squealing goes away.

Have your brakes gotten wet recently? My brakes will squeak for a few days after being caught in the rain.

You can also try cleaning the pads/caliper with some brake parts cleaner and get all the dust and nastiness out of there.

Also, make sure you use anti-squeak stuff anytime you change the pads. I use the spray-paint type and it's always worked well.
I've cleaned the rotors with brake cleaner, but its still there and gets worse as they heat up. Didn't know that they make anti-squeek stuff, guess I'll have to go a look it up.
to clean your rotors can you use chain cleaner (i have motul) or is there a difference between brake and chain cleaner?
I've never used chain cleaner. (I use WD-40 to clean my chain.) But Brake cleaner dries super-fast and doesn't leave any residue, which is why it's nice for cleaning rotors and calipers and pads and such.

k thx, thats the info i needed. i think ill invest in some brake cleaner.
Carb cleaner works as well or better than brake cleaner, also.
^ That's only sort of true. I use carb cleaner for almost everything, but recently I cheaped out and bought the Advance Auto Parts brand, and it leaves an oily residue. I never noticed the Gumout brand leaving any residue, but the cheap shit does. But yeah, brake cleaner is the shit. I just wouldn't use it for your chain, as it has a tendency to dry out and eventually crack rubber parts, and that's not good for the o-rings in your chain.
i just cleaned the rotor and caliper assembily with autozone brake cleaner on my friends gsxr. His brakes dont squeek at all anymore. The brake cleaner is acetone based so it dries super fast and wont leave your brakes slippery.
