New bike!!!!

Picked up the new bike today. As per usual it pissed down all the way so I can't give any real feelings yet as I'm yet to thrash it! Won't be posting pics as; I don't know how (hosting etc. I could email pics to someone who could host for me), and the bike is real dirty!

Everything seems good apart from one thing. As you all know 03 R6's use one light for dip beam and one light for main beam (correct me if I'm wrong), now on the main beam side on this bike there is a melted blob of plastic. Looks like the bulb got so hot, the plastic of the lens melted (although at no point is it broken through!!) Can't beleive I missed this when I viewed the bike. It wouldn't have put me off buying it but would have given me something to bargain with.

So, was this ever a Yamaha re-call, has a previous owner put in too high wattage bulbs and caused this, will this fail the MOT (first one due Sept.), and what is the price of a new light unit (03 R6)- prob best to try the scrappys.

Thanks in advance

Matt

Or ebay mate, might get one cheaper on there.

You can host your pics at

Yeah I was thinking that but I'd be amazed if they would melt the lens. Funny thing is, both sides of the light are showing signs of melting (although main beam side is the worst by far). I thought it may have been me riding back from the sellers house as it was very rainy/ foggy and I had main beam on a fair bit but the journey was only 50 miles.

Just thought maybe a rogue batch of lights went through. I'll harass my local Yamaha dealer, see if he can arrange something.

Had a quick browse around ebay/ r6parts etc and general used price seems to be £150-250. At those prices it can wait a while. (as long as it passes the MOT)

So your never supposed to use main beam?. Sorry bud, but in the conditions I was riding in, main beam was the only thing that got me seen. I personally think there is something wrong with the lens unit. this shouldn't happen.
If the bulbs have been changed and the lens has melted you might want to check the wiring too...

You can ride all day with your main beams on and it should be fine, so something is amiss.
Update. Rang previous owner earlier to ask what caused it: apparantly he did a trackday, the organisers put a sticker over the headlight. The glue on the sticker reacted with the heat from the bulb. So its not the lens melting, its hard glue.

Anyways, whatever it is, it won't come off. Went down to the local dealer to price up a new one to be told it was over £300:furious . But he had a secondhand one I could have for £90. Result:) !

So tonights job is putting the new light in. I assume its relatively straight forward (top fairing off, light in, top fairing on) Any one got any tips/ how to's??

Matt
I'd have used a hairdryer and acetone before I shelled out £90 on another headlight :)
There's no way it would have passed the MOT with the original light.

My car failed because the diffuser strips on the INSIDE of the sealed unit were causing a dull spot in the beam.....aparently it's a manufacturing fault which has passed umpteen MOTs before.

If the beam is altered by anything permanent in/on the lense, it'll fail. BTW, good buy for £90 :thumbup

I have only just read this thread and a little late I know but I have a brand new unit here, never seen the road, that you could have had.

Yes, thats pretty much the way I read it and, as the defect is right in line with the main beam, I'm pretty sure it would effect the light spread. (its 1st MOT is due Sept)

To conclude this episode, the new light unit is all fitted and functional. I'm now a happy chappy!:) Just got to get it washed and polished now. Can see me going through loads of cans of silicone spray cos theres so much black on the bike!
