never been ridden '06, leaking coolant????

Hey everybody, this is NOT how I wanted to introduce myself on the forum, but oh well...

I went to the local Yamaha dealer (Motoprimo for you MN natives) last Thursday and ended up making a deal on a new '06 R6S in black...I got the financing all figured out and the price, but haven't signed anything yet as I haven't taken delivery of the bike.

They said it would be ready to go and I could pick it up on Friday...I went down there on Friday and they tell me that they didn't have time to finish it up, so I'll have to come and get it on Tuesday. Ok, no biggie, it was a holiday weekend anyway and waaaay too hot to ride (for me anyway).

So today (Tuesday), I get a call saying that they found a coolant leak that they'll have to fix, but they should have it done by the end of the day...ok, great! I went down there again...about an hour before they close and they tell me that a seal is bad and that's why it's leaking coolant...also, they won't have it done today. Basically, I don't know when it will be ready...

My question is, how/why can/would a BRAND NEW bike have a bad seal?? Should I steer clear of this bike or what??

Thanks for the help, and hopefully I'll have a new 6 soon enough!

Tell them that you will not accept that bike and that you want an entirely different R6s. Find out the VIN number on this one and make sure they give you another one with a different VIN. To find out the VIN, ask if you can actually see the bike and look at it.
As unlikely or rare as it may be (because this is the only "seal" that comes to mind), there's the slight chance that the water pump impeller seal was not installed properly on the assembly line.
(There's also an O-ring that seals the joint where the water pump housing slips into the crankcase.)
As long as they fix it right, there's no reason it should be a problem after that.

As a side note, knowing how things can get confused when one guy tells another who tells another about things like this, you might want to have the guy in the know show you exactly what the trouble was, because "some seal" wouldn't cut it for me, and hopefully "some seal" doesn't really mean the the bike was dropped off the fork lift while still in the crate, resulting in a damaged radiator or something.

If it were me, whether or not I would take that bike would probably depend on how badly I wanted it and whether or not the place could get their hands on another just like it.
YZetc: You're thinking more rationally just like I was, which is why I posted this question in the first place...O-rings don't work if they got installed a little crooked or tore a bit upon installation...but I have an update on the bike as of yesterday:

I called them yesterday wanting to know EXACTLY what was wrong with it. The guy I talked to didn't really know (he wasn't the one working on it, so he was just looking at the work order) so he pretty much told me what they found and it sure sounds like a head gasket.

He said that they contacted Yamaha to see how they should procede with the bike (Yamaha will either tell them to fix it or they will send a new bike out) since it looked like to him that they screwed something up from the factory. I told him that I am not interested in this particular bike anymore and want a new one...he said that is most likely what will happen since that would take the least amount of time.

I have also contacted 3 other dealers (some quite far away) and it seems none have any '06 Raven R6S's in stock. Hopefully Yamaha will contact the dealer today and I'll see what my options are...

If this dealer doesn't help me out I have my eye on a ZX-6R as well...sorry to say guys.

I don't blame you one bit.

Tell them a date you want the new bike, if they don't deliver, cut bait and run.
Well, Yamaha told them to fix it and will be sending parts so they can. I talked to my sales guy and told him that I can't really rationalize taking a brand new bike that is already in the shop for extensive work when it hasn't even seen the road yet. He didn't blame me one bit and will call me when the bike is fixed "just to see where I'm at"...

In the meantime I am searching for another Raven R6S but there are NONE in the area...I've tried with 4 other dealers. This is apparently a difficult bike to find! There aren't even any showing up on their locators...

On a side note, I went and looked at ZX-6R's yesterday and I didn't like it too much. It just didn't "feel" right...so needless to say, I passed it up.

I really need to get my R6...I already ordered a crash kit and a helmet to match the Raven color scheme! Frustrating to say the least...
Talk to the Sales Manager and see what/if they can throw some stuff in or knock something off the price...maybe throw on an extended warranty?!? for the HUGE hassle and inconvenience.

Use this as a negotiating point.....:thumbup

That is a good idea. Especially with this bike.

I would still walkaway from this bike. Having experienced warranty issues, and I'm not done yet, it sucks having the bike in the shop all the time.
i would have lost my temper with all that b.s
This would be good levaerage for an extended waranty. Thats what I would do. Things happen. I wouldn't turn the bike down because of this if its what you really want. Just make sure you have the extra waranty coverage.

The Kaw is nice, but that digital tachometer is horrible. I would have one if it weren't for that tach.
I drove the ZX-6R... my opinion, it is a good bike but it I was happy to return to my 2005 R6 after the demo ride was done.
another update guys...As of Monday the bike was still partially disassembled and they were waiting to get the parts from Yamaha. It probably won't be ready until sometime next week.

I plan to go in when it's done and talk to the service manager to find out EXACTLY what the problem was...that will be the deciding factor on if I take this bike. I can't find any ANYWHERE here and none of the dealers can even get one.
get what you want, dont settle.. they should throw in a long extended warrenty if you plan on getting this bike and maybe more...

good luck with the sale!
Went down to the dealer today (they were having a Ducati demo day) and talked to the service manager to see exactly what was wrong.

Apparently they are replacing the head...it was a bad head from the factory (bad casting). The guy working on it used to run his own shop working on superbikes, so I'm not worried about the work...

It should be done no later than Friday.

What did you decide to do?
Take the bike if they'll throw in an extended warranty (a few hundred dollars value).

I had a bad guage cluster on my first R6 (2003), the trip meter wouldn't work. They replaced the whole cluster and I never had another problem. They knocked off a delivery and prep fee for me, which just about covered the ext warranty I bought later on.

I don't see what the big deal is. So they worked on your bike before you rode it. OMG it must be a bad bike!
