ok. i bought an 01' R6 exactly one week ago today. this is my first bike. when i drove it the first time i had to get on it a little in 2nd gear to avoid a car. when the engine was around 6k the bike jerked. it continued to do it throughout the day and any other time i get 2nd gear to around 6k.

i dont drive the bike hard, havent fully opened her up, havent hit highter than around 8k in any gear. i contacted the guy who sold me the bike and he said it is either the air filter, spark plugs, or coils. i know nothing about bikes but im kind of a car guy(RX7's). when it first happened i figured it could be the spark plugs, so i figured cool, easy fix, no biggy.

well after looking on hear for less than 5 minutes i found out in a hell of a lot more trouble than i thought. i have the 2nd gear problem that ive seen so much about. well ive seen a couple options, use stock parts or use more 03' parts. with using stock the same problem will pop back up so i dont like that idea at all. with using the 03' parts is better, it eliminates the problem but it more involved.

well, what about using an 03 full engine and tranny? i dont know anything about bikes or the difference between these years, but i have seen that the engine mount is different for these two. i also saw that if you use the 01 head it should solve that problem.

also, ive seen something about a GP(?) shifting upgrade, where can i find more info on this?

where can i see the differences for the two years engines and all? has anyone done this?

**whelp, i just figured out the 03 is the first year for FI....so i think this swap would be way more complicated than its worth.**

no i dont think you will be able to use 03+ engine in a 99-02. i mean it can be done, if you have the money and time for it.
99-02 - carb
03+ FI
engine mounts and angles are different.
yama---yeah i just figured out the difference in fuel delivery right before your post...man, this is a bad experience for my first bike and i havent even had it a over a week yet.
Well, I would go ahead a get the GP shift rod - just to get used to it, it won't help your current problem at all. The GP shift makes it more likely to get a smooth 1st to 2nd gear shift.

Now, I've "heard" that you can put a '03 tranny into a 1gen, but you have to put the entire '03 tranny in.

I don't believe you really need to fix this asap. Just try and ride conservitively in 2nd gear.

When you do decide to get it fixed, I would just replace them with the 3 dog gears they come with. But, I would try to learn and practice proper shifting technique and you shouldn't have this problem again.

It's like second nature for me to always shift below 6k when going from 1st to 2nd. Even though I believe that I am shifting correctly (most of the time at least) I am taking extra care not to have this problem. It does Sucks though.
where can i get more info on the GP shift rod, what it does, and purchase?

i want to find a forum member that has had personal experience with putting an 03 tranny into a 1st gen. it definately seems like the best solution. i wouldnt be happy with just using the stock inefficient equipment. i know if i used it and shifted "properly" it would reduce teh risk of the problem reaccuring. im big on overkill just to be safe though.

what do you mean by proper shifting? rev matching when you down shift? not speed shifting?

i went for a long ride today with some of my friends. i was hoping during my ride id notice my symptoms in other gears so it may be a different problem, but i wasnt so lucky. one of which knows a pretty good bit about bikes. i let him ride it and he said he had no idea what it could be. he said its definately a problem with the tranny. he said it did it in more gears than just 2nd though. i asked about slipping clutch and he said it was too violent to be a slipping clutch. my plan of action now is to research an 03 tranny install in a first gen.

detent spring? what is that and how do i check it? what are the symptoms of it foing out?

here are my symptoms:

when getting on it in 2nd gear itll jerk at higher rpms(6k or so). it will jerk just once and then cotinue to go. if you keep going up through the rpms itll jerk everyone couple of seconds. i havent stayed in second long enough for it to jerk more than twice. once or twice it even jerked on me when i shifted into 3rd and about 2-3 seconds after initially flooring it. my friend stated it did it on him in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. he went in higher rpms than me as i havent been any higher than around 10k-12k in any gear.

You can get a Gp shift rod from ussportbikes (I got mine for $30 shipped and a 10 minute install). Use the search for info on them, it's just reverse shifting; 1 up 5 down opposed to 1 down 5 up.

I am pretty sure I shift correctly as I get good smooth crips feeling shifts 95% of the time. All I do is add slight pressure (preload) to the shift lever a second or so before I upshift. As long as your giving the bike throttle, a slight prelaod it isn't going to cause the bike to go into the next gear. I also don't let off the gas completely when I upshift, I give it about 1/8 throttle.

Hmm, weird that it is doing the same thing in different gears, dunno about that.
