i love to hear about bikes that get put to the test. These bikes are meant to be ridden and its quite a shame when it seems like a vast majority of these machines don't survive past 10k miles. props to all of ya'll who keep on clickin off miles.

I have a 2003 with 12K on it. You guys talk about preventive maintenance; what do you mean by that. At twelve thousand miles, what should I do to make my bike run strong for a long time. Thanks.

Change your oil when you you are supposed to, and take care of any problems quickly. If you hear any strange noises, don't just hope they will go away. I have put just under 40k miles on my '03, and it runs just as well as when it had 10 miles.

Hey I want to try to get the award for least amount of miles. I just picked up my second R6 last spring.. It's a 99 blue with only 7,500 original miles.... I think right now I have about 8,000 on it..... not to bad for an original 99
sorry i beat you. i have a 02 when i bought the bike it only had 1600 on it. that was last spring. it now has about 4400 or so. i dont do a lot of long driving. just to work, school and around. i'll be riding it a lot more this year for sure.

My 02 R6 has about 10,400 miles now and runs great. I do work on it more than ride it right now -winter too cold to ride, I use syn amsiol or mobil one 10-40 and a extra long bosche 3323 oil filter and change it every 1,000 miles. I don't have dough for another bike,so I will just ride it till the engine blows up or when i can get a new bike but the 02 is all i really need this Summer as its in great Shape. I did a lot of supension work and the bike goes over bumps like they are nothing now. :blahblahb

Current:
06 R6 - 5900 miles
06 Hayabusa - 392 miles
00 Silverado 132,000
75 super beetle - ?? on the body, 60k on the engine
Previous:
98 EX250 - 19,000, bought it with 13k
90 GMC Sierra - 346,000
93 Mazda b2200 - 220,000

97 VFR - 32,000
74 Honda CB 360 - 47,000
78 CB 750 - 89,000

Last three are my dads commuting bikes he had when we lived in the bay area. The 750 got 69,000 miles on it before he put a new motor in it, motor wasn't bad, but he came across a fresh one for cheap. Put another 20k on before he sold it.
Like everyone is saying, anything will last as long as it's taken care of. I proved that with my first truck, 350k miles on a GM 4.3 V6 is pretty damn good, but I took care of it, you tend to do that with things that you've invested your money into. Well, people should at least, some people just don't care.
I agree that most sportbikes don't see 10k miles, but I've always been a believer in taking care of things that cost me money, but when you don't have that much money you tend to have that attitude.

dude my buddy had a 96 gixxer 750 with around 60,000 miles on it when he sold it and it was running like a champ still. Bike engines can be just as reliable as a car egine what taken care of properly. My 03 r6 had 17,500 miles on it when i sold it and not a thing wrong with it

2002 R6, 64.000+ miles, about half of those are at Palomar mountain (aka palomar international raceway) or the track. Still runs like the day I bought her new. Still whoops a LOT of azz on the newer bikes at the track too! sub 1:30's at willow, 1:22's at streets of willow, 1:55's at buttonwillow, 1:47's at pahrump...don't need a new bike till people with new ones start getting faster!

That is SO awesome! :thumbup

My 2002 R6 has 41, 6xx miles on it! Mainly piled up due to commuting to work (40+ miles one way for a while).
Regular oil changes and the thing runs great! Checked the valves at 36k and still in spec!
On the street I never rode it hard. On the track, a bit, but it was retired from race track duty at the end of 2004.

Obviously the key factor here is what type of mileage it is, not so much the number.

Assuming they had the same mileage:

I would much rather have a bike that was a weekend warrior 200-300miles per trip than to get a bike that was a city stop/go commuter for someone.
