How come people start saying that anything over 15,000 miles, the bike is considered old, and to stay away, and to be careful? Why do people say this?

I have a 2K R6 red/white with about 20,500 miles and it's still an awesome, gorgeous bike to me :bowdown It's gonna need some basic tune up stuff, but it still runs pretty good. I'm sure once I take care of a few things, it's gonna run like a champ, if not even better.

Some people make it sound like the bike is worth only 2 grand, and that with the high mileage, there are a lot of things that could go wrong with it?

For some first generation owners, how many miles do you guys have? How's your bike holding up?

people are pussies about their bikes nowadays

i dont think 20k is high for a motorcycle.. if it had like 60k that would be a different story

there is a guy that works at the local walmart and has some old honda goldwing that has 86k on the clock

as long as you do regular maintenance on a bike it shouldnt really be a problem

cuz people dont know... since the majority of sport bikes are crashed before like 10k miles, its rare to see one with higher mileage...

If you ask me, its just a testament to how well the bike was taken care of. :thumbup

My Vstar has over 25,000mi now, and still runs strong.

^I agree.

Most riders aren't going to do the required maintainance a bike will need as the miles are piled on (assuming the bike hasn't been crashed into a stone wall or stolen and parted-out into oblivion by that point).
Factor-in a few scrapes and road rash marks in the once-smooth paint and metal surfaces along with an unsightly dirty/rusty drive chain, squeaky-sounding rear suspension pivot bearings, and maybe even a set of out-of-synch and/or semi plugged-up set of carbs due to lack of use (brought on by the bike sitting from a loss of interest in and/or available time for riding the bike), and some 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 (for example) YZF-R6 motorcycles can look and sound older than they are.
These bikes are incredibly reliable and well-designed, but when you realize the fact that many guys will dread having to touch a wrench to make a drive chain adjustment, it's easy to see why a bike that's been sitting outside for the better part of three or four years will be subject to old wives' tales about how 10,000 miles is too many.

Plus, there's the ever present planned obsolescence that a new model imposes on an older model (the older bike is now a has-been), and in many riders' eyes, even if a 1999 YZF-R6L is kept in showroom condition, the bike will always seem to some as yesterday's news.

Another issue with higher mileage bikes, is since the bike revs so high. The engine can wear out quicker if not taken proper care of.

10k miles on a bike where the guy revs the piss out of it every second he gets is a worn bike.

Unless I want to haul ass, I shift out of 1st around 6000rpm and never go over 5000 rpm on the street. Unless Im on the highway doing like 85.

r6

I have an 02 r6 with close to 25,000 on it. Most were put on in the first 2 years. I've only done basic maintenance. The original battery is finally dieing so it will need a new one soon. So far it has been trouble free:thumbup

i had an 01 with 24k on the clock when it got stolen, it started to show signs of 2nd gear slippage, and would have had more miles on it today had it not been stolen....mainly icy hot squids think that anything above 10k is "high" mileage

'99 with about 40,000 miles. I've got the 2nd gear slip and my speedo only works on occasion. Other than that it still runs like a top.
