Headshake, what is it?

967 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  blackonwhite99r6
I have an '02 and just recently put a 70 in the front instead of the factory 60.

I dropped the triple clamps about 4 mm but I need to do more as I am having headshake. I think people recommend dropping it 6-8mm.

What is Headshake though?

I have it, feel it on bumps but I don't know what is really happening.:umm

it's a minor tank slapper. it's when your handle bars oscillate left to right due to hard braking, hitting a bump, your geometry is messed up, etc.
Thanks, gotta fix it quickly now I know it's a mini tank slapper.
pitt-bull damper should fix that, but tighten the steering nut too. I am having some other problems with this mod as it steers to the right too much, check your back wheel too, i don't think lowering the front forks is the best thing to do. I lowered mine 3mm, 8.5 was way too much and dangerous.
Try raising the triples 1mm or turn up the preload on your rear shock.
We adjusted the rear preload too and still the chatter.

I want to get a damper soon, but would like to fix this first so that the damper enhances the ride and not just cover something up. Not sure if that makes sense.

you should have your geometry dialed in first, damper souldn't be your soultion to bad geometry
^that's what i was thinking, thanks.
sorry to borrow this thread for a quesiton of mine.....

i don't do wheelies or anything crazy....would it still be a good investment to get a steering damper?....just in case of those bumps on the road and stuff?

thanks in advance

dont worry able what everyone says on this forum just listen to "sunofwolfwolf" :hyper :hyper :hyper
Well I agree, a damper should not be used to cover up a geometry problem, but I do think they help a ton and would be a worthwhile investment for anybody because they basically eliminate tank slappers and head shake. I think that it is a combination of suspension and the fork height, try measuring it the correct way and keep messing with your preload in your fork and rear, and if that doesnt work, try a 70 series. If in the end none of that works, get a damper.
