electrical problem

I recently put my 00 R6 in the shop to have the charging system checked because my battery kept going dead but everything else was fine, nothing wrong when it was running with the lights or anything like that. It turns out the rectifier/regulator was shot so I had it replaced. The shop said that it is now putting out current but that the battery is still not getting charged. They also said that that the wiring harness on the bike is not the correct one for a 00. Not really sure how that happened (i bought the bike used) Any suggestions on how to get this thing to work properly. I don;t see how since its putting out current the battery isn;t getting charged. (but then again i'm new to bikes and don;t know a whole lot about them).
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Theres only 2 types of harnesses for the old R6

99-00 and 01-02, the 01-02 will not work with the 99-00 parts since the connectors are different for certain components. So I dont see how it couldnt be the correct harness if its in there and hooked up.

It could be a dead battery that just wont hold a charge anymore.
the battery is fine, i just bought it and have been keeping it on a tender because its not charging properly.
Greetings Mr. Jones, quickly read HERE 1st..... I think I know exactly what your problem might be.....

The 1st time my rectifier blew, somehow the stator/alternator/thing inside the engine -cover on the left of the bike, also fried......which is the thing/alternator/stator that charges the battery.....had it rewired for a penny....:thumbup
I trhought the same thing but the bike still runs fine. All the lights work properly and everything the battery is just not getting charged. D duch, do you know which components are different between the two harnesses???
^That's exactly my point....even with a blown magneto/altenator, the bike will still run fine for a while untill the battery goes flat. The bike would then stutter to a halt and die.....You then recharge the battery and all's ok again.....test the altenator with an ohm-meter.

The connector for the tail lights, and various relay connectors, the ECU plug is different. Normally its smaller components and I know it dosent have a certain relay connector for the gauges compared to the 99-00.

If its the wrong wiring harness ALOT of stuff on your bike wouldnt work since it just wouldnt hook up.

So did they replace the rectifier and it still wouldnt work? A bad charging system can ruin a battery, did they test the battery?

Only other things I can think of is a bad connection somewhere like a short, blown fuse or the stator.
The rectifier was replaced and is putting out current and the shop says that they looked at the wiring and rewired a couple things and the battery is now charging. They said that the headlights weren't wired properly which is what caused the rectifier to go in the first place. With a 00 R6 are both side headlights suppost to be on when the bike is on or just one? i always thought it was both but they are saying its just the one side on low beams then both when the high beams are on. I have 4 bulbs 2 on each side. Thanks and sorry if these are dumb questions.

WHAT?!?

There are only 2 bulbs total for a 99-02 r6 headlight, its an H4 bulb that has hi/lo built into a single bulb. And yes both sides are on at the same time.

Something quite odd is going on. Is this what they are telling you or do you know first hand that your bike has 4 bulbs for the headlights.

The only other way it has 4 bulbs are the corner marker lights that euro and possibly canadian spec bikes have but they are not headlights.

Head light causing the rectifier to go? That sounds off.
i went ahead and attached a link to a picture of te front of my bike.

when the bike is on the inside lights from both sides are on. and from what i can remember when i flip the high beams on the inside ones cut off and the outside ones cut on. but i'm 100% positive when the bike is on and the low's are on the insides on bith sides are on.
Well i was just looking at my front end compared with some other 99-02 fronts and yah i just noticed that my bike has 03+ lights on it.... sooo any suggestions on what to have the shop do as far as rewiring them. The shop said that they were pulling to much current or somthing and thats what caused the rectifier to fail. any thought or suggestions i'm really new to the whole bike thing obviously by not being able to tell the difference with the lights (mechancially solid on cars/trucks but clueless on bikes) and I don;t want to get screwed over by the shop. Thanks
Ah, aftermarket I see.

Are those HID?

Now I cant really say whats going on with your bike as if thats been added theres no telling what else has been done.
not sure if they are HID yah i definatly didn;t realize that when i bought it otherwise i might have of been a little more leary plus everything seemed to work fine when i test rode it and everything.
any ideas how far back in the wiring you would have to go to get 03 lights to work on a 00???

No idea as Ive never worked on an 03 and dont have the wiring schematic to compare.

But the lights causing the rectifier to burn out makes sense if the lights are drawing too much current causing the rectifier to generate more heat.

Just a guess, you probalby wouldnt need to rewire too much, as the relays for the lights are all up front. You might be able to just splice in the 03 light harness. Maybe switch to a differnt gauge wire or add a resistor.
all right thanks, i'll talk with the guys at the shop today and see what they say.

hey i was just reading this trying to figure out what is wrong with my '01 signals, and you realy seam to know your wiring, if you get a chance could you check this thread out for me and see if you have any ideas??
