do motorcycle tires need to be balanced?

If the tires are new, then yes they need to be balanced. If you are buying take-offs, then no, you don't have to balance them.
I dont understand why take offs dont have to be balanced. In my opinion, all tires you mount should be balanced. Not all wheels are perfectly balanced from the factory. Things like the rotors and sprocket and its carrier also make a difference in the overall balance.

Used tires can't be balanced. Talk to any tire company. :thumbup
then how do people put tires on them selves. i doubt they have a balancer.

They're not that expensive. You can find them on e-bay for < $200

take them to get balanced, or buy a static balancer

Gee, let me think about it... yes.

Now before anyone else decides to spout off, call up any tire company that goes to the race track and ask them if they balance take-offs. The answer is no.

You have no need to balance a take-off tire that has already been run in. Thanks for playing. :thumbup

Useuly I agree with what you say buy thats just plain silly, you can balance ANYTHING.
Yeah, I should have phased it like my statement above. You have "NO NEED" to balance a take-off. It's pointless to do so.

they won't balance take-off because they don't want to assume liability for a used tire that they don't have any control over...it has nothing to do with need. don't be an idiot...get the tires balanced. seriously, how much effort does it take to static balance a tire?

why don't they balance take offs? liability

should you balance your wheel every time you change tires? yes

you don't only balance for tires, you balance for wheels.

also, because if the wheel doesnt balance out, the customer bitches, and it's not worth their time for such little money

Dude, I seriously hope you are kidding. Let's assume in your cosmic world that the tire is perfectly balanced - that has nothing to do with the wheel being perfectly balanced (which it never is).

Always check the balance of the wheel/tire combo. Period.
It's not liability, if it was only that, do you think these guys would flip your tires or even install shagged take-off's for you at the track? Liability ain't it.

It's a complete waste of time to balance a take-off. It will do you absolutely no good, unless the tire still has 95% or more of the original rubber still on it.

But if you are into wasting time on something that gives you no benefit what-so-ever, be my guest. Talk to some tire services that actually go to the race track and ask them specifically why they don't balance shagged take-off's. And I'm not talking about the guy that has a few sets of Bridgestones in the back of his truck. Talk to Dunlop or Michelin.
hey tz, not to doubt you or anything, and i totally respect your views and opinions.

i had a set of michelin take offs that i bought from someone here on r6mn. on my last trackday, i had Dale Kieffer's guys (racer's edge performance and i think, the michelin distributor for the south west), mount and balance them for $20. maybe they thought i should get all my $20 worth. i dunno, but they did balance them.
