Hey ive only had my 03 R6 for exactly a week, I have 400 miles on it and ive been taking it easy getting aquainted with it and following manual's instructions on breaking it in. Im just curious though cause i dont really know anyone that rides to ask this; at what rpm do you shift gears? like in a 40mph road, in what range do you shift before you get to the gear you cruise on, and is that 3rd or 4th gear? Also, what if you are about to go 100mph, how high do you rev each gear before shifiting? Im sure this answer changes from person to person and so far ive been going by feel just trying to be smooth, but some input would be appreciated :) <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/pimp.gif" />

Once you break the bike in completely, you MUST upshift PRECISELY . . . whenever you feel like it.

Shift at lowers RPM's for better gas mileage (yeah, I know) and higher RPM's for better performance. That's about it. The bike doesn't care.

I shift out of first at 10mph. second at 20 mph, 3rd at 30 mph and 4th at 40. I use 5th right up to the 55 mph speed limit.

You might hurt the engine if you rev over 5000 rpm.

I'm not too sure that you'll hurt the engine if you rev higher than 5K RPMs (considering a redline of over 14K).

In my opinion, the bike runs much better at higher RPMs vs lower. I'm still consider myself somewhat of below average rider and I rev my bike between 8 and 10K RPMs before shifting (non city, non residential driving). I picked this tip up from other board users and it does change the riding experience (much better).

Riding on the interstate, with heavy traffic(or simply riding the back roads), I like the 6 to 8K RPM feel of the bike (Between 4th and 5th gear). The response feels good with quick power to accelerate if necessary. Just cruising along with no cares... 6th gear, easy shifting.

I'd be curious you hear input from others also.

Ernie, you are the sarcasm master! Did you consciously seek out "stupid question" threads just to test out your skill? :lol

For normal street riding, I don't see the need to rev above 8,000 RPM. For all out banzai running, you can rev it up to 15,000 RPM and it will be ok, as long as the motor is broken in.
