electrical problem

Very common problem on the 99-02 models. Mine did the exact same thing you mentioned. Luckily mine was a quick, cheap, and easy fix. The r/r plug burnt up. I am guessing that might be the case with yours as well, at least thats where I would start looking. Like I said, it is a common thing with these. A new plug is only $5-10 to fix. You will know if that's it because when you take the seat off to pull it out and look at it, you will see a big burn spot on the plug. You can search the board and see that this is a pretty common problem. Like I said though, thankfully it's a pretty painless (and cheap) fix. The guy i bought my 02 R6 from was selling his bike for dirt cheap because he thought he was going to have to dump a ton of $$ into the electrical system when it was just the burnt out plug. Check that first and then go from there. I would bet that's the problem. Keep us posted and good luck. Hopefully that fixes it.

Yeah i got mine for dirt cheap too cause the guy i got it from didn't know that he had a intermittent coil. Other then that i got some cheap entertainment now and (knock on wood) no second gear problem on this bike. I had a bad ground on my bike that needed to be fixed it wasent makin a good connection. My r/r plug has been fried once too though but we got those connectors at work. Tons of them to be exact :)
