new member please help 2002 r6 wont start

I bought a 2002 r6 at the beginning of the season and it ran great. it started making a chattering noise a little later so I gave it to a mechanic for a valve adjustment, he tells me the noise is actually the timing chain and it needs replaced so I let him do it. after I got it back it ran terrible. the rpms wouldn't go over 2 and the bike wouldn't stay running unless the throttle was twisted. after a while of holding the throttle it would run but it would die over and over. so I took it to another mechanic who said he couldn't figure out the problem and gave it back. the battery was completely fried at this point so I tried to jump it and it made a grinding noise and the engine locked so I removed the started and turned the gears backward and freed the engine up. I replaced the battery and now it turns over fine but wont start. I am getting spark and fuel. I'm at a loss as to what to do next. what would keep it from starting at this point? could I have fried something? maybe this guy just hooked stuff up wrong or whatever but I cant find the issue. anything helps I'm savvy with cars but bikes are new to me and I cant take it to Yamaha at the moment because I don't have the funds lol. also on a side note I cannot get diagnostics mode to come up at all I don't know if that's a sign of another problem, I cant find anything on that.

I'm new on the boards right now, but you said it's a 2002 R6? Carbureted? Almost sounds like when someone was doing the work they left the petcock under the tank on the OFF position. Mine leaked enough to let it idle and rev a little, then it would die. Just something to check. Do our bikes have a diagnostic mode?
