Prospective R6 owner

Hey everyone, obviously I'm new to the site and consequently to R6s. A breif background on me: I'm from WI and I first began riding my neighbors 125cc dirt bike in middleschool/early highschool. In highschool my dad got a honda ct70 trail bike that I used to commute around town. We had that untill 2006. My little brother bought a 2006 Honda rebel new the summer of 06 which he and I shared (I'd take the bike if he needed my car... ect). At the beginning of last summer I purchased a totalled 1994 ZX6e and fixed her up. I have been riding it for about a year and recently a co worker has made an offer on it that I couldn't refuse.

Provided everything goes smoothly with that transaction, I am in the market for a new(er) yet affordable sport bike. My spending cap is $5000.

As far as yamaha's go, I have found a couple R6s i'm seriously considering.

My #1 choice is a 2002 R6 with 10175 miles for 3200


I am also looking at a 2003 R6 with 6300 miles. The guy is asking 5800 so I need to see if he'd drop the price a bit.

Am I correct that 2003 is a different generation than 2002? If so what would be the advantages of stepping up to a 2003?
