i have ben there twice and just got back from my second tour.... im in the army...

in OIF3-4 i did alot of missions in the baghdad area... NOT TO BAD

the lastest OIF5-6 we did over 650missions in one year in Balad.... F'n SUCKED!!... worse thing i have ever been through... i tell people it was the CNN deployment.... the crazy carp you hear on tv that was me.. =)~

BUT the experience and the good times i did have over there i wouldnt change a thing... maybe a few but it was great... but dont take this the wrong way
navy..... not to dangerous unles you get volun"told" to be in a CLIP support team... help protect supply convoys from Kawaitt to baghdad or baghdad to northern iraq FOBs... but navy.. you should be a FOBBIT or maybe some kind of COSTOMS checker person guy thingy......

but all set aside.. good luck stay safe and when the mortar comes flying into the FOB... dont be the one that jumps to ground and covers there head "Thats what your told to do" if you hear the Incomming Sirens watch everybody dive to the ground... while they do that.... LOOK UP.. SCAN THE SKY.... FIND THE MORTAR..... these things are'nt the size of a golf ball.... You'll see it!..... 9 out of 10 times that mortar isnt comming anywhere near you... judge the speed and direction and keep walking to the chow hall.... watching everyone dive face first into the dirt....

i have never got that.... weird..... if your in Balad you find out what i mean...

there were over 8000 rocket and mortar attacks on the main FOB in OIF5-6

goodluck be safe and dont worrie about it.... you'll be eating better and probley living better over there than you are now... =)~

I got back in July of last year. I was in Fallujah with the Marines, but traveled all over Iraq to Mosul, Tikrit, Kirkuk, Balad, Taji, Baghdad (Victory and International Zone), Tallil, and Basrah. Where are you going? I can tell you about each location.

Good luck. As for the mortars...I wouldn't take a chance. When they launch 40-50 of them and they are hitting within 50 meters of your location, you want to be in a duck and cover bunker. Trust me...

You know do my part but nope didnt happen. so its fine. i'm in the marines i really never heard of a marine getting turned down to go over there. cause we need marines here to do work in the rear. damn never really heard of that but if they can find an excuse then they will...be safe

"...stay safe...." Good advice.......the rest of your post is a serious contradiction. Don't follow the bad advice.......being the only person mantaining a high profile during mortar attacks is kinda stupid. How many Hero Walks do ya have to do before you realize those Mortars can be walked in by spotters on the FOB? Yea smart move to look up to identify the distance and direction when your being targeted by no fewer than six mortars originating from multiple POOs..... You are a MAJOR...? Are fuck'n for real....? Just like an officer......
