few definitions for you non-navy/coastie guys and gals

SK2=E5
SK1=E6
SKC=E7

Ok, Ive been at my unit for 18 months. Our shop dynamic is 1 SKC, 2 SK1s, and 4 SK2s. (I made SK1 so theres now 3 SK1s and 3 SK2s). One SK1 is night shift, and one is dayshift.

Now, Ive only been in for 5.5 years. But I have been at 4 different units not including my A-School. The day shift SK1 is the worst, most ineffective, laziest, most self serving shop supervisor I have EVER had to deal with. Let me explain why I feel this way.

1. this man spends all day surfin the net. eh, not that big of a deal except when he is more interested in the net than actually doing his job. we dont get tasked, or if we do its last minute because he didnt keep up with whats supposed to be done and when.

2. there seems to be a different set of rules for him than the people he supervises. (ie, leaving early to "pick up" his kids when our SKC is on leave for the week even though they normally ride the bus but never wants to grant early libo for anyone else.)

3. If it doesnt affect his life, or libo then it doesnt matter. (ie, he didnt go to bat for us when we were thrown into a Junior Officer of the Day rotation even tho we already stand cell phone recall and 1 saturday a month for parts issue as well as rotation through a night shift.)

4. He cant pass information for shit. Our shop was supposed to do a "morale" day. the request was denied by the higher ups. Even tho he spoke to SK2 B (who was currently on the night shift 1530-2330) the evening before, he neglected to tell her the event was canceled and she showed up at 0730 to attend.

5. He doesnt even know how to do our job. Hes been here just as long as the rest of us, but barely even knows how to log into our parts tracking system.

6. when we need to reach him we never can. texts and phone calls go unanswered. His excuse is he never got them or he didnt hear it ring.

I could go on and on and on. Ive spoken to my SKC as an SK2 and more recently as an SK1 over and over again. I have spoken to him personally several times. Offered to help take some of the office responsibility off of his plate because his excuse for everything is that everyone is pickin on him or his home life is just too stressful. Im fed up and I dont know what else to do. I hate coming to work, I hate working for him. No one in the office has any respect for him. and I am lost as to what to do next.

Wow you made rate fast! Sucks to hear but very familar, there will be places you go where you hate who you work for, but unless he totally blows his job and gets fired your stuck with it. Work hard and do your job well, it won't go unnoticed. Think of dealing with the problem as a challenge. good luck hopefully its not too much longer that you have to work with him.

Belle... he should have an enlisted supervisor and if he doesn't that means he answers directly to the Commander. Most Commanders have an open door policy and if I were you I would exercise it. The Commander may not want to hear it either in which case you are stuck. But this is something you might need to be willing to fall on your sword about if it is truly bothering you as bad as you make it sound. If he is that much of a turd you might want to keep your friends close and you enemies closer and switch to his shift so he cant torpedo your other section. Just a thought.

I may just request that my SKC assign me to the desk down the hill until I transfer. I am due in 6 months. If I dont have to work with him every day, I will be fine. Just tired of the SK2s coming to me for direction and instruction. Its not my job, I dont get the perks that he does so why should I be doing his job?

It's a marine corps policy that really wouldn't apply to this, usually when a marine has a great fear of reprisal from his or her local chain and feels extremely alienated. The Marine has a right to bypass the company level command and go directly up the chain without supposed fear of backlash, but it is still frowned upon if the proper channels haven't been at least tried. In your situation, I would probably just suck it up or try to get the transfer, but I would definitely confront the turd privately and make him aware of how is being perceived.

Belle, as a fellow first class, it is your job... And if he doesn't take responsibility, take it from him. Take his job, problem solved! I know it isn't that easy... But that is what I would do
