Navy Bonus / Student Loan Question
So in short, I'm in the delayed entry program for the Navy.
I just talked with my recruiter about my student loans (about $30,000), and he said I can either take my job bonus - $40,000 - or get my loans paid off, but not both.
Anybody know any truth to that?
The bonus is for SEALS, so although I'm 100% dedicated to making it, I'm going to play it safe and get my loans paid off.

I would have thought that bonuses were different than paying off student loans. I want both?

no matter what you do depending on what you decide to do if your job has a bonus you should get a bonus. the choice you are thinking about should be wiping you college loans clean or getting a GI bill worth about 36K+ at the end of your enlistment. If you already have you degree you should just get rid of your loans. Last time i checked there was no navy bonus over 12K unless you had a degree and even then it shouldn't be over 18K or so. Are you going to be a nuke or linguist? Bottem line is it is always better to be out of debt than in debt.

^Inquiring. Get it right
He just needs all the facts before he makes his decision. I don't get a bonus. The bonus is its something I'm interested in.

I got a whopping 2 grand before taxes, but I had to go in a certain time frame and attend school and be my rate/mos for a minimum of 2 years. Id kill for 40k enlistment bonus.

I don't think they'll give you anything until you finish training. I'd never heard of anybody getting any enlistment bonus before completing school. I would look into your contract first. I mean there is a very high drop out rate at BUDS.

Yes, $40k is for finishing BUD/S
What I decided is this ... to erase $33,000 in student loans, and get $7,000 bonus when I pass BUD/S. (The max they will give is $40,000)
Since I am getting rid of the loans, does that mean I dont get the GI Bill? I want to get a Masters after I get out.
PS= I ship out in less than 3 weeks!
