Alright y'all, here it is. I am a graduating senior in AFROTC at the University of Colorado and will be commissioning in 27 days. Just recently lost my pilot slot...biggest disappointment of my entire life. In order to become a 'Fighter' pilot, you must first be a regular AF pilot. Everyone trains together, but you will be racked and stacked at Undergraduate Pilot Training and if hot shit, will receive your plane of choice. Here are the BASIC requirements to receive a pilot slot: First of all, you have to be a commissioned officer. 4yrs ROTC, 4yrs Academy, or approx 12 weeks of OTS. You must be taller than 64" and have a sitting height of at least 34'', but be no taller than 77'' with a sitting height no greater than 40". Their are specific weight requirements based on your height, but if you can pass the PFT you should be good (1min pushups, 1min situps, 1.5 mile run). Qualification for potential flying duties requires uncorrected distant vision of no worse than 20/50 (pilot) and 20/200 (navigator), correctable to no less than 20/20 in each eye. Successful completion of the Pseudoisochromatic Plates (colorblind circles) or Farnsworth Lantern color vision tests and the Vision Test Apparatus – Near and Distant or Titmus Stereofly or Randot Stereo or Verhoeff depth perception tests is required. This is where most people get the boot, myself included. Not many people realize they are colorblind until they take these tests. If you are at all colorblind, as I am, you cannot be an AF pilot. Worst feeling in the world, trust me...Anyways, thats about it. If you do meet all of those standards, simply receiving a pilot slot is incredibly difficult. Many things go into whats called your PCSM score including previous flying hours, AFOQT pilot score, TBAS (test of basic aviation skills) scores, in the case of ROTC and Academy your GPA is taken into account, your PFT scores, and most importantly, your Commander's ranking. That's the basics of it all, if you want any more information or any clarification on this long ass rant, let me know. I wish you the best, you will need it...
