Default 2006/7 R6 keys

Just bought a bike but only got 1 'black' key with it - want to get another cut for safety but told by yamaha dealer that can only be done from red master for £40 ish and without the red key looking at £900!!!
does this sound right - appreciate the keys have a 'transponder' in them for the immobiliser system but surely they can be copied from a black key?
cheers dave

The red key is the 'key' to resolving this matter, so be prepared for a shock or a whacking great bill. Others have experienced this problem but I can never remember them finding a cheap solution. I'm sure someone else can advise you better though.

The only way round it is to get a second hand ecu and lock set with a red key, or track electronics sell an 'unlocked' ecu for around £275

I have the same prob on my 04 R6 and have bought a US ecu that doesn't have the immobiliser built in, although this route does need the wiring altering slightly to get it to work and I have it sat with the spare key and wiring instructions should I ever lose my only transponder key!!, not sure if this can be done on the 06, might be worth asking some club racers how they managed to go keyless ignition without using the yec kit

Hope ya get sorted mate

If i remember correctly, the red key is for making the bike program a new key. Take your existing key to a key cutting shop and they should be able to read the code and supply a new one.

Might work Or just use what Gav says, track electronics and have an ECU that is unchipped.

My kit ECU never turned up but am still using the normal key, if I wanted to run the mount for the damper on the race bike under the ignition then could always move what I have under the petrol tank somewhere. Still more people now mount the damper on race R6's to the frame as it runs down the side so is cooler.

Still didn't stop my sprint doing 227 laps round the costal circuit of Angelsey in 6 hours yesterday
