Default How loud is 98db?

Just in the process of booking a trackday and its a 98db day. Is that going to be a road exhaust jobbie, or a little bit more?

Agree with the above.
Done Coombe a few times and they insist on road legal. My 6 on the standard can has scored between 98-103db at 11-12K rpm. Saying that , I'm sure their test kit is calibrated to over-read a bit , but anyone with a fruity can gets turned away.

Grummy and I discussed this at the May Meet.

I was randomly selected for a noise level test at a race meeting a couple of months back. The bike has a full Micron race system. They tested at 8Krpm and gave a verdict of 95dB.

Do the track day organisers state the RPMs they test at?

I personally believe that track day /club race officials don't know what they're doing with the meters......Grummy was tested at 103dB with a stock pipe and can, I was tested at 95dB with a full race system.

I'm pretty sure by the 98dB limit, they mean "road systems only", but it doesn't sound as shit...... bearing in mind, they'll want the day to run as quietly as possible to stop the complaining neighbours.

That does seem odd... last day i did at cadwell it was a a full 105db noisy thing... My R6 with a shortened Leo Vince was 95db, a mates R1 with Termignoni cans and Y piece was 98db the only really loud thing was a BMW K1200S with a full Akrapovic system which measured 103db and it was loud sounded like the world was gonna end!

I think Grummy must have fell foul to a badly calibrated device or a badly calibrated user of the device!

If you look on the VIN plate of the bike it will state what the standard db is and at what rpm.

Castle Combe are very strict on noise. They test at 3/4 revs about 1 Meter from the end of the can. I've got a Micron road can that is a bit louder than standard and that got through with a few db to spare but i've seen some standard stubby cans fail there. Loads of V twins struggle to pass the noise test there, so they should they sound terrible

The way i look at it is, if your going to travel hundreds of miles to do a track day and they say standard cans or 98db then play it safe and fit the standard one back on. Be a shame to get there only to be told you have a loud can and your not aloud on.
Imagine having a numpty on the testing gear or a in acurate meter and you where 2db over you would be gutted.
If you have a race pipe fitted then the standard one goes back on for the MOT anyways.
I put my standard back on for the ring not so long back for this very reason.

Took my track 6 with a full akro to Thruxton just to have a noise test before I booked for Brands, it came up as 101db at 7000rpm first run then 100db the next 2 checks. Great guy there had a long talk about why they don't do bike trackdays (too fast) and all about what it used to be like when they did.

If the day is at Donnington then the noise test is a ride by test as they have several mics all around the circuit so you are constantly tested to stop you putting a quiet can on then swopping to a noisey one later.

I run a full Hindle system and that passes the Donnington test with no issues at all and its a full race system.

They should test the bike 1metre away from the exhaust 2/3rds of your rev limit and pointing the mic at 45 degrees. Problem is they sometimes shove it right in the end of the exhaust, the machines are not calibrated properly and can give some wild readings.

A friend at Oulton was tested at 105db last year, this year same bike etc etc 98db so go figure !.

I woudl say play it safe and put your standard can back on if it isn't too much hassle or if you are taking a van just make sure you pack both.

The days we are looking at going are the 3rd and 4th of August at mallory.
According to the webby the friday is fine but the saturday is a 98db day.
I have the removable road legal baffles for my akra cans on my R1, so should be fine.

As for my mates, Im sure they can sort something out somehow.

Cheers for the repies all
