Default First trackday on my R6

Hi All,

Got my first bike trackday next week and I'm wondering about a couple of things; (its a 2005 model R6 (upside down fork radial brakes))

I've done plenty of trackdays in a car and know that sometimes you can eat through brake pads.

Does anyone know what sort of life I can expect from the pads on track, I know everyone is different in the way brakes are used and which track. I have the original pads on and they have covered 8,500 miles and have about 3mm left and look healthy. I was going to get some as spare or even replace them with a sport pad before I go.

(Its Oulton Park, England in case anyone has been)

Also are the original pads any good on the track? They do seem to bit better after a good press and have got warm which usually means they are more sport orientated.

Also how many tanks of fuel is normally used on a full trackday. I pretty much always get 150 miles out of the tank, I guess I could atleast half that in mileage.

I'm not desparate for answers as I think I'll still get some pads and maybe take a jerry can of fuel (obviously my dad would bring this in the car!!) but any info would be great.

Dave

You should chew through pads all that fast on a bike. I have vesrahs on both my bikes and they have held up just fine over multiple trackdays and race weekends and road miles. Just make sure that your pads have a decent amount of left in them.

The stock pads are not bad. I did my first two days on the R6 with the stock pads. They stopped the bike fine.

I got a full race/track day season out of my vesrah pads (35-40 events)

I am running the stock pads on the 07 r6 I have and they seem to be holding up just fine for both as well.

One thing you'll want to look into is steel braided lines to minimize brake fade..

You'll need a full tank and an additional 5 gal of fuel for a track day... It depends on what im doing as to how much fuel I run through... If I am coaching an Intermediate group and running all of my A sessions, I'll use about 10-15 gal..

If i am coaching B group and not playing in A group much, I;ll use about 7 gal total

Dave I also have an 05 r6 same as yours. and i haven't chenge my pads ever since i got my bike.. that doesn't means i dont check it all the time.. i do check it everyweek... even if im not riding... i just got use to doing it.. checking my bike for anything at all... anyways... the stock pads are pretty good since its your first track day.. it will hold up pretty well.. its good in a way at list you will have a base knoledge of how the stck brake pads will perform.. so when you start to change it.. you have an i dea of what you need.. one thing though .. do not i mean do not do allot of modification a week before you go to the track... cuz if you do it will pretty much feel like a different bike.. and you wont be comfortable riding it.. you'll just end up worry'ng allot then you wont be able to focus on the reason why you are on the track... to have fun and learn... and yeah about the pads.. i haven't change mine sine 05 and i got about 30K miles on it and a good 8 track days.. and about tons of canyon riding on it.. i think it wime for me to change it.. but still im not on the limit yet... anywyas...if you know your not on the limit yet.. and you still have a good pad then that means your still good.. do research and read ask the right people... and for gas.. always bring extra.. you never know when you'll need it... but most of the time... i use 2 full tank i ride on the Intermidiate group... GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!!!
