Default Wheelies & rpm

The following video seemed the best on youtube for learning how to do wheelies without murdering oneself, but I was curious at what rpm do all these actions occur?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=qncPBZ9DRRk

Also, can someone give a good explanation of what slipping the clutch entails?

Thanks!

What hes talking about in the video pretty much goes like this...ill give you an example

say your going about 20mph in first gear, with steady throttle
clutch in, bring the throttle up to about 8k and drop the clutch
all extremely quick, your giving the back wheel alot of power at once which lifts the front

does that make a little more sense?

you don't need much throttle to clutch it up in first, if you are just learning to clutch it up, i wouldn't recommend learning in first. Second is more forgiveable for very slight mistakes. I got comfortable powering up first, by closing the throttle and snapping in back open. Take small steps, and wear gear if you want.

do not clutch first if you are on an r6...you will probably loop it. start practicing clutching in 2nd

How fast do you have to go to clutch it up in 2nd? I can clutch it in 1st, but haven't been able to in 2nd.

Thanks lunchbox, makes perfect sense. I kinda figured that, but I wanted to ask someone who really knew.

And I don't think I'd try it in 1st gear, the fairings are too pretty on my R6 to wreck just yet.

Anybody have a rpm-range that the bike would start lifting in 1st gear?

Default rpm range

the bike should start coming up between 10,000 to 13,000 range, depending on your size, some of my buds can get the front end in the air at less than 10,000 rpm, I dont know if that helps or not

That will work if your just going use it to get used to the feeling of the wheel coming off the ground but it's not going to help the learning curve very much cause your reving the hell out of the bike in 1st and that can be intimidating to a new rider

I personally would stay away from 1st just because you need to have good throttle control and experience to make it work, 1st is not forgiving to operator error.

I learned in 2nd and stuck with it. The throttle isn't as twitchy any you have alot more r's to play with the balance point. Everyone has their own way of doing things but for me it was 2nd around 45-50mph which was around 8grand.
I just take of from a stop, shift into second and as I reach my target speed I slip the clutch to around 10-11grand and up she comes. To be honest though your never going to be watching the tach at the same time and you end up going by sound and feel. Take your time and it will come. Oh yeah and dont mess around town, the cops dont think it's as cool as you do and it can get pricy quick.
good luck

I have an '07. Would the speed/rpm's be the same?

The only reason I've been clutching up in first only is cause I've been to chicken to ride on 1 wheel any faster than 30mph. So first has been working for me, since I can't ride them very far...which brings me to another question. How in the hell do you keep the front in the air for longer than 2 seconds??? I don't let off any once it's up, and even when I feel it start to come down, I'll open the throttle all the way and it won't stay up, just accelerate faster. I start my wheelies at 17-19mph in first.

Thanks for all the advice, guys.. and definitely not downtown hah! Not so much the cops, but crashing in front of 500 people is not cool! I'm pretty new to riding in general, so I'll probably save the stupidity for an empty parking lot when I feel more comfortable with throttle/clutch control.
