Default got caught speeding by a airplane, how could this be?

so i am heading home from cincy to columbus on I-71 with a row of cars, 3 to be exact and 2 of us get pulled over for 83 in a 65. i had the radar on and never went off. an airplane clocked us at 83. 2 of us get pulled over and the 3rd never did. i always thought that the cop had to be in sight in order to clock and pull you over, at least that is what i was told in ohio. i am not pissed i got the ticket, the cheapest i have ever had at $85, but the fact it was a fucking plane. that just doesnt seem fair to me. in virgina i have seen signs for planes doing radar, but never here in ohio. has anyone ever heard of this happening and know if its true that the cop must be in sight?
it seemed to be a speed trap do to the fact i got off at the next exit to piss and i counted 6 cops in that little area, from the exit ramp to the gas station. also, there were some cops going after others on the highway. never saw any cops on the trip down or back until then. the one time i didnt ride the bike down for the day.

edit / update

for those who have helped, thank you. i have found some info on this. the part i would like to point out if 4511.21 in ohio refers to speeding. please read this and tell me what you think this means regarding this ordnance.

4511.091 Arrest or citation of driver based on radar, timing device or radio message from another officer.

(A) The driver of any motor vehicle that has been checked by radar, or by any electrical or mechanical timing device to determine the speed of the motor vehicle over a measured distance of a highway or a measured distance of a private road or driveway, and found to be in violation of any of the provisions of section 4511.21 or 4511.211 of the Revised Code, may be arrested until a warrant can be obtained, provided the arresting officer has observed the recording of the speed of the motor vehicle by the radio microwaves, electrical or mechanical timing device, or has received a radio message from the officer who observed the speed of the motor vehicle recorded by the radio microwaves, electrical or mechanical timing device; provided, in case of an arrest based on such a message, the radio message has been dispatched immediately after the speed of the motor vehicle was recorded and the arresting officer is furnished a description of the motor vehicle for proper identification and the recorded speed.

(B) If the driver of a motor vehicle being driven on a public street or highway of this state is observed violating any provision of this chapter other than section 4511.21 or 4511.211 of the Revised Code by a law enforcement officer situated at any location, including in any type of airborne aircraft or airship, that law enforcement officer may send a radio message to another law enforcement officer, and the other law enforcement officer may arrest the driver of the motor vehicle until a warrant can be obtained or may issue the driver a citation for the violation; provided, if an arrest or citation is based on such a message, the radio message is dispatched immediately after the violation is observed and the law enforcement officer who observes the violation furnishes to the law enforcement officer who makes the arrest or issues the citation a description of the alleged violation and the motor vehicle for proper identification.

Effective Date: 07-29-1998

i know i have put part of this up, but this is the whole thing. please tell me what you think.

in the first part it does not say that you can radio another officer to stop and give a ticket, just arrest.
in the second part it states it can be any other violation other than 4511.21 or 4511.211.

this is the only case in the supreme court files http://www.sconet.state.oh.us/rod/ne...-Ohio-3017.pdf
this guy was caught using laser, i believe the cop said they were using radar in my case. it was also noted in the case it didnt matter what device they were using at the time.

never really understood how that works either, but i remember someone saying they measure your speed from one lane line to another... as for the validity of that claim.. me not know.

Those white lines that run across the interstate... or the little white dashes on the side... (not the passing lines, the ones perpendicular to those that are usually in one lane online) they pace you from one to the next from the airplane and that is how they get your speed. Pretttty tricky. You are the first person I've ever heard of that has gotten nabbed that way, always figured they didn't do it often, which I guess they don't.

I drove home from eastern washington last weekend, over snoqualmie pass and I'm pretty sure they were radaring from a helicopter. I was fuckin pissed though- I pay a lot in taxes and it would be impossible to make enough from tickets to make it worth radaring from the air- between the cost of gas/pilot/outfitting the aircraft with needed equipment/maintaining it. I'm all for having them for emergency rescues- NOT for seeing if people are speeding.

that sucks you got caught w/ this bullshit- at least it wasn't a big ticket.

Ohio Highway Patrol has a dozen one man airplanes. Each pilot has two stop watches on the control stick. He then times the time it takes between two of the white lines marked on the side of the road. Then he radios to the troopers ahead of your location to "let you off". They typically only patrol during high traffic times(holidays, etc.). They patrol I-70, I-71, and I-270.

Also, they will pull you over for sure if you are driving aggressively, especially switching lanes and following to close.

+1 Pretty big waste of money... but I guess their slogan of "Speed Kills" will always be their excuse.

4511.091 Arrest or citation of driver based on radar, timing device or radio message from another officer.
