Default Lucky to be alive

I was working in the ER yesterday(EMT student) when we got word that a Hall EMS was bringing in a motorcycle accident where the rider was running from the cops.

When they wheeled him in I talked to the sheriff before seeing the patient. The sheriff said that when he first saw the rider he was riding in the oncoming lane swerving at a ford explorer, the sheriff flipped on the lights and the bike took off at over 100mph. The sheriff had called off the chase, but continued down the road.

The next thing he knew he had run over the riders helmet in the road and managed to stop short of hitting the bike scattered down the road.

apparently the bike had hit a guard rail in a left hand turn and exploded scattering debris 100 feet down the road. He called for back up and they started looking for the body. It took them 3 hours to find him. They finally had to call the Georgia State Patrol helicopter to use thermal imaging to find him down in some thick brush. Apparently he had crawled in and was hiding.

The rider managed to come out of the accident with a badly sprained ankle and some rash on his left back.

At this point I'm thinking, what a douche, too bad he didn't splatter himself.

My view changed after the officers left and I got to talk to him a little though. He seemed like a normal guy, He had got in a fight with his wife after they had got home from a club. She got mad and took off while she was drunk. He hopped on the bike to try to get her to stop. When he saw the cop, he ran so that she wouldn't get a DUI. Unfortunately for him he never even saw the turn.(I drove by the site later)

His wife arrived later and was extremely upset and felt horrible. At this point I started feeling for the guy because I could see myself doing the same thing trying to keep her out of trouble. The also had a 18 month old son, and watching him hug his sleeping boy goodbye broke my heart. I could picture myself having to hug my daughter good bye like that.

It's sad how one split second decision can ruin a life.

It's that worst thing I've seen in the ER yet.

Damn I wasn't expecting that turn in the story. Hope it works out for him. He still ran from the cops though

Moral of the story, don't run from the cops.

In a situation like that, do they typically book the guy in jail once he's released from the hospital? That wife of his sounds like a real douche bag, she should be the one in the hospital bed instead of him.

They put a "hold" on him instead of arresting him right away, that way he pays the hospital bills instead of the county.

Sad part is...If he stopped they might've just dropped it to reckless driving.

That is crazy! He was just sitting there for 3 hours?

Yeah...but in real life they would have gotten him for DUI, wreckless driving, and any other charges they could come up with...AND his wife would still be bitching at him instead of being happy he is alive.

What road did this happen on?

I understand kinda, but he probably just would have been better off if he speed off then pulled over and got a ticket for speeding or maybe bust a wheelie to divert the cops attention and get pulled over for that. I guess you cant really think straight in stressful situations though.
