Trying to decide on a helmet

Well ever since i started riding sportbikes, guess its been about 4 years now, i've always just stuck with the cheap helmets, but after thinking about it and reading alot on these forums, i really need to upgrade to a nice, decent helmet. I know i can't go wrong with all the high dollar helmets (ie. shoei, arai, agv, suomy...) but to be honest with you i cant afford to spend 500+ on a helmet, atleast not right now. So on to my question, is there another brand that would be atleast close to as good as some of the high dollar helmets for cheaper? I know I know, this is one thing i shouldn't try to save money on, but i just figured at some point (price range) i stop paying for more protection, and start paying for name brand. More then anything i'm looking for a helmet that if and/or when i do crash my brain won't be turned to mush. Any suggestions?

Now a days accidents are very commen to access so all of you take some precation to prevent those accidents. the minimum requirements are

high top shoes
street bike gloves
snell and DOT

many of the top model helmets can be had for under $500 now. the ti tech, the rx7, the x11 the extreme even the rsr2. check ebay
