Default Important Helmet Question

I recently purchased a used Shoei helmet. When the helmet arrived at my house, I was disturbed by the packing, or lack thereof. The helmet was on its side in a box with no packing or padding at all around it. The box was slightly too small for the helmet, which means that it could not roll around (the only positive I could see). The box was also thin and weak due to being pushed out some by the helmet being too big.
My question is this: Should I be concerned with the integrity of the helmet?
Dropping a helmet crushes some of the internal composition of the helmet and therefore lessens its ability to protect in a crash. What is the likelihood that my “new” helmet is hurt?
Also, Is there any way for me to tell if the helmet is actually hurt, or can the inside be messed up with no visible indication on the helmet?
Ultimately: Should I return the helmet, or is it ok to use? If I return it, Is it right to expect the seller to refund what I paid + return shipping?
Thanks in advance to everyone for your help.

return it. none of what you described sounds correct. My shoei's all came with a lot of padding around it and more stuff inside. the way it was packed there is no way it could have just moved around. It had a large pad built into the box to protect the rear of the helmet. If it was banged around yes it could have cracked the helmet and you would have no idea. return it and get a new one.

That's the problem. I bought it from a guy on another forum. He said it had no damage and was worn only ten times. Because of the shipping, I feel like it is a "dropped" helmet now, and not what I paid for.
