Default Woah that was close Need advice

So I need some tips, because I would really like to prevent it from happening again.

Yesterday I was riding and I saw a yellow light infront of me, no cars in front of me, no cars in the intersection turning. But for some reason I figured I'd try and stop. So I don't remember exactly what happened, but I must've stepped on the rear brakes too much and locked up the rear wheel. As that happened my rear end was slidding around. After that I somehow managed to stop and ended up in the middle of the intersection. This happened at about 60km/h.

My question is, what is a rider suppose to do if the rear wheel locks up? (in a straight line, in this case)?

I would really like to get better control of the rear brakes as I use both when I come to a stop, and maybe some one could offer some advice. Any advice. Thanks.

When the rear brake locks up continue to look straight ahead at the horizon. Do NOT look down or side to side. It might fishtail a little bit but nothing big.

The bese thing you can do is practice your emergency braking in a large, empty lot. Just front brake, just rear brake, and then both. You can even put a shirt down as your starting point to see how long it takes in all 3 scenarios. Some will say don't use the back brake but you will see it helps. Practice practice practice.

Oh yeah, next time post this in the riding tips section unless you actually go down.

The rear tire is pretty easy to lock up which is why I almost never use it. I can brake with the front brake to the point that my rear tire is just off the pavement. If your rear tire locks up and the bike begins to slide out its best to try to skid to a stop. If the rear steps out and you let off the rear brake it will snap the bike back in line which is never a good thing.

Yeah keep it locked up and slide if you do fall it will not be as bad. Have you taken the MSF course? It might help, Maybe try different riding shoes/boots, as maybe you cant feel it moving(maybe your wearing big boots) and then it locks, just some suggestions. Oh yea hand keep the front headin straight i believe.

Yeah, the MSF course taught me how to control a slide... basically just stick with it, use the front to keep the bike lined up, and don't make any sudden/jerky movements.

I did take a motorcycle course but in BC they dont' have a MSF course?
At the basic course they didn't teach anything about what to do in slides or anything neither did the traffic course!

So basically the consensus is to stay off the rear brakes for now... and just practice using it in an empty lot?

Just use progressive braking with your front brake. A substantial amount of your braking power comes from the front brake.

DUDE!!!!! SAME EXACT thing happened to me today but i was on the freeway coming to an emergency stop. My bike started to suddenly jet side to side... I just kept looking forward and was able to get out of the sticky situation. People on the right lane were like "Good going dude!!! That was close!!!" haha.
