Default downshift blip

so how much blip should i give the throttle to a downshift? I tried experimenting by upshifting a gear, and i saw the rpms drop by 500rpms.. so is this the same amount of blip i should give the throttle to downshift? that is, assuming i do this all very quickly...

It's a feel thing. I snap to nearly WOT when I blip, but it's fast.

When the shift is smooth, you have it right. If it's rough, you aren't there.

Yeah, it's mostly a feel thing, and largely depends on how high your revs are to begin with. If I'm just putting around town, it only takes a tiny blip, since I'm only around 5-6k rpm anyway. Out in the twisties or on the track, I whack on the throttle a bit harder, since I'm between 10 and 15k rpm.

Practice, practice, practice. I'd say it took me a few weeks of trying it (and not being very smooth with it) until I got it right. One day I just noticed it was working, and that was that. Now I'm working on clutchless downshifting...

One of the things to remember is that at the point you're releasing the clutch there should be no throttle. The engine is coasting, it's just that the revs are up and it didn't wind down to idle - that's when you let the clutch out. If there's any gas you'll get a jerk. Also, it's always better to over-rev a bit than under-rev. If you over-rev then delay releasing the clutch up until the point the revs will go down enough to match.

I'm curious if installing that 1/4 turn throttle will make it way easier.

I agree with the "feel" notion. I got the hang of the downshift pretty quickly but I was used to downshifting in a car already.

Is that a good idea? I can do it but it locks up the rear wheel and just feels nasty.

I'd also be interested to know how you are "working" on this.

I hope you are being sarcastic.

I don't blip the throttle either, but not because I back it in (much). After taking Jason Pridmore's STAR school, I stopped trying to blip. He doesn't blip either, he teaches to just let out the clutch a little slower to bring the engine RPM up without dumping the clutch. But, he ALSO teaches to use whatever method you prefer and are more comfortable with. So, if you prefer to blip, more power to ya. To be honest, I just had a hard time mastering it with my short fingers.
