Default Highside?

So I saw this video somewhere in this forum of a guy highside, i'm sure all of you guys have seen this. But it wasnt the 1st time i'v seen it happen but its the 1st time i'v seen it sense i have been riding. My question is how can this be controlled or caught. Or what to do if you feel your backend sliding? I figure maybe like a car and turning to the slide but I dont know...do you stay on the throttle to keep the rear tire sliding so it will not suddenlycatch the road and toss you over?

When you know you're screwed, don't cut the throttle and hope you hope you lowside. Usually you'll have no time to react or even notice the slide. You'll be like "wtf i'm up in the air"

A highside happens very quickly!! It's when your rear end slides, then catches grip while sideways, causing you to fly like a bird and fall like a rock!

oh and you will know when your rearend is silding!

Yeah, i agree. you can feel the slide start to happen. You're right too, steer into the slide, but NOT under any circumstances, chop the throttle. That is a guaranteed hi-side. In fact, if anything, you'll want to open the throttle more to keep that back wheel spinnin.

Of course, sometimes you're just f*cked. That's what happened to me. Tried like hell to save it, then just to low side, but ended up taking a flight instead.

^^^ Yeah, forces involved in a highside are far greater than anything you humanly possible to counteract. Another vote on keeping that throttle cracked open to hopefully have a greater chance of saving it than for sure taking flight by chopping it off...

A highside isn't saveable. But they all start off as slides, which usually means lowsides!

The difference is when the back starts to slip, if you snap the gas to WOT, you'll lowside. If you shut the gas off, you'll highside. There's degrees here, if you're only slipping a bit and do it, you might get a wiggle, you might get a full on slapper, and you might just get spit off entirely.

When the back end starts to let go, if the pavement is consistent (i.e., it's not sliding becuase of a grease spot on the corner), you can hold the throttle steady, and hang off slightly farther. This will have you get the bike a bit more vertical, which should give you a nice gradual increase in traction to help hook up. Some guys can let off the gas just a touch and have it come back without that fast transition that spits you off, but that's a twitchy and delicate skill there.

However, in no case should you cut your losses and hop off.

Big dresser hits a deer, the dude stayed on. Scary shit, but it's the same concept.

*NWS= if you're able to read the boards at work, you're probably okay. That is, if you get in trouble for reading that site, you'd probably get in trouble for reading this one too.
