Default Shifting

This might be a dumb question but at how many RPMs are you supposed to shift when your just cruising. I find myself shifting at about 4000. But because the RPMs go so much higher, i was wondering if im supposed to let it go higher or is that just for racing situations.

I just mainly shift by the way the bike feels, you want to keep the bike in it's power band. 4000 is too early to shift, after the shift the bike would not be able to make much power if you needed to accelerate quickly.

The power band REALLY kicks in around 7 or 8 grand so I would try to keep the bike in that range.

I concur with shifting at 7K for cruising aroung town. It keeps you just below the powerband (just in case you need it to avoid careless cagers).

I usually shift around 14.25k or 14.5k in town, 15.6k if im riding hard. This way everyone looks at you waiting for the pistons to fly off into orbit... pretty neat IMO

As above...though when scratching it pays to shift so that it doesn't land square in the power dip at 8500. That really sucks,

Default Cruising

If I'm just crusing (30 - 40 mph) then I usually shift at about 5k. That way you stay in 2nd gear where the power is less harsh (than 1st). In the UK if I shifted at 7k and wanted to stay at road legal speeds in town, I would be riding in first gear everywhere.

I think the moral is - If you're just cruising then shift at what ever feels comfortable.
