Ok to downshift to first when stopping?
Hey guys sorry for the squid question. I have been riding my 2005 R6 for 2 weeks now. In my MSF class, they told us any time you are coming to a stop, to put the bike in first so that you are ready to take off again in an emergency situation.
I have noticed the bike makes a whining noise when I downshift to first while rolling to a stop with the clutch in. Is this normal? Is it hard on the transmission?

yea...just keep the clutch in or even slowly release the clutch to engine brake.
And when you are at a stop, watch in you side mirrors for someone that might not brake. (it is unlikely someone would hit you but 1 time is what it takes to mess up your life)

What they meant is that you should shift to first, keep the clutch in, and use the brakes to stop. There's really no point in using engine braking in that situation.

I don't see why not? You'll have more engine response if you need it and it keeps you from wearing down (although minimal, I know) your brake pads.

Sure there is. You're rolling up to the light and suddenly it turns green. Would you rather be in first with the clutch out so you can simply roll on throttle and go or would you rather blip the throttle to match your speed, let out the clutch, and roll on throttle?
I always come to lights in gear with no clutch until I'm sure I have to stop.

I didn't realize it was that complicated to let the clutch out when the light turns green.
