"heel-toe" braking on a bike..
is it really hard to break while you blip the throttle to down shift on a motorcycle?
any tips?

I use two fingers on the brake lever as I blip. For the twisting action, I use my thumb, fourth and pinky finger.
Other than that, it's just practice to get it smooth. Just be careful not to downshift to first when you have any sort of speed, or your rear tire will be all over the place =)

Like many other things, practice is the key. When you get comfortable and experienced, all fingers and feet will be active at some point while riding. Like plum said, you can brake and blip the throttle at the same time.
Just be careful. There have been instances where racers have accidently squeezed the front brake harder than intended while down shifting into a turn. This causes lose of traction in the front and a hard low-side crash. The same can be replicated on the street so be careful.
It just takes practice to build muscle memory.

Yup, practice makes perfect in this case. It took me a while when I first started riding motorcycles to modulate the brake and throttle at the same time when downshifting, but now it is second nature.
The hardest part is keeping steady pressure on the brake handle while blipping the throttle. Like asphaltpilot said, upsetting the front end of the bike while diving into a turn can have some very unwanted effects......

slip the clutch alot at first to make sure ur rear tire doesnt go crazy...
its practice... we could all tell u how we do it but wont help unless u go out there and mess around.... the first few times practice at low speeds so u get the feel of blipping...
my friend first bike, r6 freeway downshifted to like 2nd or 3rd no clutch slip or blipping just DROPPED it and his tire was all over the place on the FREEWAYYY soo careful !

is this method neceessary to be a really good rider on the track?
i could just squeeze the brakes, pull the clutch in, blip the throttle and downshifft and lean through the turn without doing all that simultanneously...
i tried practicing and its dam dangerous

Its just like heal-toe in a car. Just takes time and practice. Practice when your coming to a stop sign, and cycle through the gears byt rev-matching and down shifting.

like what everone else said ^^^
the first few times will be weird and you'll jerk a bit, just practice in an OPEN parking lot (that includes curbs, i've had an incident with a curb once). and you'll get the hang of it in less than 1hr.....
again modulaiton an the brake lever is key, you don't want to jerk the lever when you twist. using your thumb/palm and 4th/5th finger makes it easier to twist the throttle without effecting the brake lever.
and watch out for 1st year....i was on a track once and did that.....boy was it scary....i was barreling down hill towards a turn, i brake, and all the weight is in the front + the fact i was down hill makes it even lighter in the back, and the guy in front of me broke really hard/really early in the middle of the lane and i didn't really have anywhere to go so i had to stay behind him and also brake really hard all of a sudden and i dropped down to 1st when i didn't even know and the rear broke loose (that turn was supposed to be a 2nd gear corner, thats how slow the guy in front was going).
then the funny part was i went around him on the outside still very slowly in that turn and wound on the gas and forgot i was in 1st gear and i stood the bike up on the back wheel.....scared the shit outta me. i've never even purposely popped a wheelie that high before.
