Default Clunk when shifting to 1st

I seem to get a clunk when I down shift coming to a stop. I'm worried that this isn’t normal. It’s nothing violent or anything but I can fill it and from what I've heard a shift should be heard not felt. When I wait to down shift, i.e. wait tell I am going slower and about to stop completely, it will shit without fuss. By the way this happens usually when I shift from 2nd to 1st but also to a lesser degree when I shift from 3rd to 2nd. Its almost unnoticeable from 4th to 3rd. Should I just wait tell I’m at low speed to shift down to first? Thanks for any help you might be able to give me.

I get a pronounced 'clunk' from 2nd to 1st as well. All my bikes have done this

It's normal.

I think it's due to the fact that the tranny has to skip over neutral and slip into first. If the bike is moving more than 5-10 mph there is an audible clunk.

I am in the habit of not shifting into first until I am at nearly a complete stop. You only need first gear when taking off from a stop anyways.

i do, and i think most everyone does when they come to a stop. i find it easier to start moving my bike from first gear. and its kinda hard to get from 2nd to first w/out downshifting.

i think what he's saying is that when he's approaching a stop (such as a red light) he pulls in the clutch, downshifts all the way to first and comes to a stop w/out letting out on the clutch handle
so this wouldnt cause engine braking, just normal braking

and my bike did the same thing when i downshifted to first from second while rolling up to a stop. now i wait til the last second to downshift before i put my foot down. like someone else said, that will stop that clunking feeling/sound

Damnit all, I just explained this in the double clutching thread. The solution is either wait until you're going slow or double clutch. If anyone argues with me, I'll point out the idiot that you are.

Doubleclutch to downshift into first? Um, speaking of idiots.

Revmatch into first? That's another story. A blip will help things hugely.
