Default visual vs. audio alerts

i got into a discussion about effective ways of alerting a motorcyclist with a friend. the situation is this: say we want to come up with a better way of letting you know that either you are low on fuel, or you have left your blinker on. would a bright, flashing light located either on top of the gauges, under the windscreen, or next to one of the mirrors be a more effective way of alerting you, or an audio beep of some sort coming from your helmet. obviously you would have to have some sort of speaker attached to the inside of your helmet for this.

which alerting method would be less distracting to you or have a less chance of startling you, and which method you would like better?

your 2 cents will help us determine who had the better idea.

Blinkers? I don't use em. Hand signals are my choice, but if I leave a right hander up and don't take it down be in search of the middle finger in an erect position.

Fuel- A light seems to work well for me but wish it would flash when its REALLY time to get gas.

Light on the dash. A sudden beep from inside the helmet would be startling/annoying.

how about something that you wear that would vibrate, like a nicklace or wrist/bicep band?

Flashing lights..

Loud beeping noises would be bad, then again a lot of us ride with MP3 players so that would be moot.

I think it would be a difficult to notice something vibrating while riding..

Now notify me via a hud inside the visor, then we are talking business..

HUD's would be so nice. I am rather good about knowing how far I have been on a tank of gas and which routes I can take and roll into the gas station right as the light is coming on. As far as the turn signals, who needs an alert how about an auto cut off, that would be m.o.n.e.y.

Someone was working on a HUD, never saw it again once it was announced though.
