im learning too, just take everything slow, if something scares u slow down and work up to it...

motorcycle is in a way like a bike, just take it slow, ride around humble and eventually riding will become 2nd nature, then u can start trying to get faster around the turns, lean more, stunts if u plan too...

im sure more experienced riders will contribute so my last piece of advice is to truly listen to those that are experienced, have gone in over there head, and those that have safely become a skilled rider

don't assume cars see you because even if they do they don't care about you. keep your head on a swivel, they will come into your lane like you aren't even there.

start doing trackdays, it'll make you a better street rider.

If haven't already you may want to take the MSF course, that is a good starting point. It helped me initially.

And then as others have mentioned take it easy. Ride Safe.

Oh, and helmets, jackets and other safety gear can help keep you alive as well.

Definitely take the MSF. I took it last year because my friend wanted to get into bikes but he flaked out after we signed up. I went anyways even though I was riding off and on for about 22 years (15 yrs on the street). I learned a lot in the course.

Ride like no one can see you.

Don't stop in the middle of the street to make a left turn. Easy way to get a car up your ass.

Wear safety gear. Minimum helmet, jacket and gloves. You should wear boots that cover your ankles.

Check your bike before every ride. Check tire pressures often. At least once a week.

Take it easy and enjoy your new (to you) bike!!!

make sure to stay out of the "oil slicks" at the intersections (spot in the middle of the road where the cages leak oil everywhere), careful of the crosswalk paint, especially when it is wet, like it was said before-Ride like you're invincable, like nobody can see you. Because most of the cars (cages) can't. They will pull out of intersections on you, get over into your lane, just watch out for them. And know that there is a time and a place to go fast, cut the corners, stunt, whatever... There is much more, it will come with experience. Did you ride dirt bikes or anything? Or is this your first motorcycle period?

Get gear and wear it....everything you can wear without sweating to death
Take the safety course
Ride like you're invisible....never assume cagers see you
Continue to learn from others, especially their mistakes
Take it to the track.....this will vastly improve your riding skills

Don't assume that other drivers are stupid and don't see you.

Assume that they're maliciously trying to kill you. Leave yourself an "out" always.

Always be aware of how much traction is available, and don't use it all.

Get the best gear you can afford - helmet, full gauntlet gloves, leather jacket, riding pants (textile or leather) over the ankle boots.
Take some rider instruction: trackdays, MSF, Pridmore Class.
Ride paranoid and constantly scan your environment (cars, people, road conditions, weather, fellow riders, animals)
Know when not to ride (feeling "off", illness, drunk, angry...)
Practice stopping (emergency braking) in an empty parking lot. This will come in handy when you least expect it...
Keep your machine in top form (maintenance)

Just a few things to start with.
