Default How to ride in the wind?

On my way home yesterday it was windy as hell. I was getting pushed from one side of the lane to the other any suggestions for riding in the wind?

well try to tuck in and ride in the middle of the lane you can also move your ass to one side or another on the seat to offset the wind but be careful if the wind switches direction on you and be ready if you pass a truck trailer because they will block the side gusts pretty well and once your in front the wind hits all at once

I know how that wind is but I always thought it was fun? Maybe try to do what the birds do? Fly sideways

I'm not sure if this helps but it helped me last night when riding over a bridge when it was real windy.. I just tucked down some and put more weight up front.. I wasn't hiding behind the windscreen.. and I gave it some gas.. It felt more stable and I had more control..

Yeah I do what velocity did. Whenever I feel like I'm in trouble I move my weight up front. It feels more stable, give it a try.

I find it helpful to tuck. May look a little strange seeing a rider tuck at speed of traffic, but best to be safe. Some folks like to stick a knee out but that's always made it worse for me. Also may seem strange, but when it's windy it's seems to be worst from about 50 - 85 mph. Seems to level out when going faster (or slower).

I agree with Kwal559. It seems worse at average traffic speeds. I ride the NJ Turnpike spur to the Lincoln tunnel pretty regularly (most of it is raised like a bridge). I tuck and move forward, and either stick to the right lane with Grandma, or dart on in the left lane. But now that I'm thinking about it maybe it's just the acceleration forces that make me feel more stable. The tuck and forward weight shift definitely work though. There's less surface area that way.

Last month I rode the R6 from Dallas to the SF Bay Area, and a lot of that was in New Mexico and Arizona with 60 mph side winds. So I spent about ten hours riding in heavy winds.

You just learn to get down and ignore it. They will move you sideways a foot or two, so ride where that won't kill you. The hardest part for me was the semi trucks coming the other way. They go 80-90 mph in that country and the slipstream is killer, I learned to watch the truck coming, wait until it had just gone by, and then turn into the slipstream slightly. That kept me from getting blasted over two feet.

Aren't you supposed to stay to one side or the other in a lane, and not right in the middle?

The middle is usually slippery b/c of oil slicks, washer fluid, leaks etc. etc.

Or atleast thats what I've been told....
