Default Tank slappers = soiled pants

Was ridin today with a few buddies and got my first look at a tankslapper... My buddy on his fireblade bounces one up in second and rides it for about a 1/4 mile, this is by far the longest he's ever wheelied and has never had a full blown slapper, until today.... he lets it down around 130kmh and the bike started to shake like crazy, his feet get thrown off the pegs and he's flailing all over the place this action persists for about a hundred feet or so in which a light post is in his direct path finally he manages to regain control and pulls over... we pull up next to him and he's white as a ghost and shaking.... we cruised home nice and slow and the day was done. Which brings me to my question.. when you find yourself ridin a slapper what do you do???? stay on the gas???? close the throttle or just hang on for dear life and pray???? Anybody thats conquered them please let me know so I have a slight idea of what to do when the reaper calls my name....

thanks for the help....

not to be a dick but other than standing up and gassing the bike, that post really doesn't say anything about what to do and what not to do.

i am wanting to learn also so i will do a search on it, but just wanted to let you know that link really wasn't all that helpful for a noob like myself.

Well there's a link within that link that obviously isn't any good anymore...But anyway.

To answer:

I recently had a nice slapper on the track. Worst thing you could do is chop the throttle. Say hello to Mr. Highside. :|
I don't recommend gassing it but in laws of physics it would help. None of that standing crap though. Just relax your body. I immediately let off the throttle so I am not accelerating or decelerating and just hold the bike straight up (which it wants to do anyway), and ride it out. I can't give alot more advice since I've only had like 3 of them. Best thing I can say is get a damper. One of the best investments you can make for your bike IMHO.
Hope that helps some...

thanks dude, yeah that standing stuff seems kind of hard when people say that sometimes your feet are getting thrown off the pegs.

One other point worth mentioning...

By applying the back breaks (while you are experiencing a tankslapper) you will move the center of gravity, and this will help stabilize the bike.

Default T Slapping

Does slapping happen to almost everyone? I just heard about it for the first time today. I have never ridden a bike, but I am looking to get my fisrt bike (R6) in a few months! I'm doing alot of reading in the mean time. I'm not looking forward to it if it's bound to happen. Do some bikes do it more than others? What do you all feel it's mostly realated to as far as cause?

Thanks,
Dave

Default tank slap

I had a mild tank slapper on the freeway and it was not a pretty thing. It happened on I-94 (anyone in michigan knows what a s--thole that freeway is) and luckily I just stayed on the gas and it righted itself. I'm seriously considering getting a steering dampner now. Has anyone put one on their bike, and how big of a difference did it make?
