Default How to Crash Well?

Hey there, I'm just curious if there is any literature around on how to minimize the risk of injury in a crash. I've read that if you know you're going down, you should distance yourself from the bike and whatnot. What about body positioning? Is rolling or sliding better? Would the rider have any control over this anyway?

In Keith Code's books he talks about how to fall.

Rule of thumb I have used is if you can't save it, don't hold on to the bike. It will just drag you along for the ride. Try to just tubmle away and NEVER try to get up while you are still moving.

I would think that sliding beats rolling, get away from the bike unless it'll end up behind you, still moving when you slow/stop. In that case stay with it until you're stopped, or can separate safely. When you think you're stopped, wait a couple seconds and make sure. There's a good chance that slower feels like stop and you'll get a nasty surprise when you try and stand. Try to relax and enjoy the ride. You're less likely to suffer soft tissue tears/sprains/etc. if you're not tense. Also less of a chance to roll. Watch the pros when they crash, especially dirt bike guys. Can you say "Ragdoll?" Try to disperse the shock area widely. Instead of sliding on your ass, ride your ass, back, legs and feet. More contact area will slow you down faster and you'll be less likely to wear through any one part of your leathers.

Lots to think of, and if youdo go down about the only thing that'll be going through your mind is either "shit" or "how did I get here?"

Yeah, DEFINATELY don't try to stand up. A fukkin 25 mph lowside F'd my ankle up for 6 months already. I'm no friggin geezer either (23) - and I've never had a sprain or a broken bone either. I usually bounce back from shit, but I twisted my ankle bad and the thing still has shit for mobility. Sucks...

Rolling is worse than sliding, because things get broken and sprained more easily.
If you don't have leathers on I don't know which would be worse.
I had a wreck (13 years ago, you and dumb) with no leathers. I rolled about 200 feet and the back slid about 100 feet. I suffered two 1/2 inch spots of road rash, a separated shoulder, bad sprained wrist, and sprained ankle.

Any tips on the average guy that does not wear leather.
should you ride closer to the side of the road that the middle so it will be easier to get to the grass in event of a crash?

You don't have a lot of control of what direction you go. The best advice is to dress for the fall. If you are going to wear jeans wear draggin jeans and get knee protection. Also get good gloves and at least a Phoenix jacket.
I wear long pants, racing boots, back protector, racing gloves, leather jacket, and a helmet when I ride to work.
When I play I zip the jacket to the pants and wear full leathers with everything that I mentioned.

Draggin Jeans look just like any other pair of jeans. The newer versions have a place or velcro for hard knee and shin armor.
