Default Almost accident question

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone,

This is my first post. I am in the process of buying a 06 Raven R6. I have a question for you guys. I am 31 yrs old and have been riding dirt bikes and race quads since the age of 8. But I don't have to much seat time on a street bike, I'd say less then 200 miles. Heres my question, a few year back I was taking a guys brand new GSXR 750 for a spin. As I am coming back into the nieghborhood there was an 1/8 mile stretch of rode so I clutched the bike and started what I thought was a pretty decent wheelie. Well here is were the problem started. As soon as the front wheel touched the ground the bike went into a vicious wobble (side to side). I thought for sure it was going to buck me off. Somehow I regained control of it or it regained control of its self. When I gave the bike back to the guy I didn't mention that it happened, but I am sure he saw me shaking. (I was scared shitless). Now that I am going to get a bike, I can't quit thinking about it and wondering why it happened.

Does anyone have a reason why this would happen from a seamingly routine wheelie?

you landed with the wheel turned slightly.

invest in a steering dampner or dont wheelie

I wondered if the steering damper would fix the problem, so I researched them and didn't hear anything about wheelies. Thanks for the info.

it wont help correct your mistake of cocking the wheel to the side while in the air...

i mentioned the dampner because you said you had severe wobbling (or head shake) and the dampner would help reduce the wobbling after you come down

definitely need a damper!! i don't know about the 06, but my 01 R6 is fairly sensitive up front, not only in wheelies but at speeds over 140mph. Without a stabilizer I'm sure it'd have been a greasespot on some highway a long time ago.
For the wheelie, even a slightly imperfect landing will cause a tank slapper (your wobble) the stabilizer will help you keep perfectly straight, or at least straight-er. Other than that - I keep my R6 fully planted, I love it too much to risk wheelie damage which often doesn't bode well for the bike.

lol major tank slappage!, for stunting, you'll want to purchase an aftermarket steerign dampener. This will decrease the changes of tank slapping because of the extra stability in control and steering. Also mentioned on super bikes on SPEED channel

gas fixes everything

no seriously it does. if your back end starts coming around out of a turn, dont chop the throttle give it more. if your bike starts doing weird things give it more gas and 98% of the time it will sort itself out.

read twist of the wrist 2 dudez (which i think should be a reqt for every sportbiker... but thats just my )
