Question Self Install of Coils-Anybody get Yamaha to refund $$?

Hey all-

I just replaced my coils-would have taken it to the dealer but the wait to get in was a fookin month! So I plunk down $130 for four new coils and install them. The Denso's show obvious signs of burning.

Has anybody suceeded at getting Yamaha to refund their money after they bought the coils themselves and installed them?

Thanks in advance.

They should have given them to you no charge over the counter if your bike is an 03 and the wait was so long to get in for service.

You might have a bit of a hard time getting your money back after the fact...

Good luck..

Yeah, that's the way it should have worked... I tried that route and they said they couldn't do it unless their service department did the work and determined it was the coils. Really lame.

.....determine if it's the coils? If they are Denso's and your bike is an '03 they are covered by TSB M2003-019 period. Regardless of warranty status.

It's pretty cut and dried, no testing to be done. Just swap 'em out with the Mitsu's.

Your dealer is being a bit of a prick IMO...

I know it's not cool, but that's the way they all do it, yamaha may still "good will" the cost of the coils to you. Usually they have no problem refunding the money to a customer that paid for parts that got recalled so long as it happened BEFORE the recall came out. To my knowledge, after the fact, you're kind of on your own.
Flame at will, but in my 9yrs as a tech at a yamaha dealership, that is my experience.

You should be able to give them the VIN and they can check if the bike has had the recall done. Or in this case you may want to show up so they can get the VIN off the bike.

It seems like you should be able to make a pretty compelling arguement to get your money back that way.

I took mine out while changing the plugs and showed them to the dealer, he asked for the VIN then ordered new ones for me. He told me they could do the work or just hand them over to me, I chose to do it myself. I didnt have to give them a penny, go get your money back unless yours had already been changed before.

Also $130 is cheap for the coils, I was told they sell for about $400 for the set.

Question

Does it matter if the dealer I purchased the coils from isn't the same one I bought the bike from?

Since the parts guy already blew me off-should I talk to the service manager about getting a refund or somebody else?

TIA

They told me that the service dept. needed to do the labor in order to get the coils for free, but I talked them into giving them to me. I brought in the obviously smoked Denso's and they handed over new ones free of charge.
