Default How to remove gas tank vs. steering damper in way

I am trying to get to my airbox/carbs/spark plugs and am trying to remove my tank. Normally not such a prestigious process I assume however a steering damper is getting in the way and I am unsure of the best solution. I took some pictures and accidentally resized them very small. If you want larger ones let me know and I can snap some more.

You can see there that it won't let me lift my tank straight back and for some reason I can not lift if up enough from the back end to get it out either. Seems like I would need to remove that large center thing on the handlebars or at least loosen it so that damper can move out of the way....unsure how to do that best however since the damper also really eliminates any moving room. This is a 2000 R6 by the way, thanks!

Wish I could edit, but rules do not allow...sorry about the super small than super big pictures heh....

Here is where I was yesterday...

I got to here today...

Now how do I remove that? It does not want to budge and I really hope I do not have to remove my entire steering assembly to get it out of the way....

I have an 03. I think the tank is the same but I'm not sure. I do not have a damper on it and can't immediately see a way of pulling that damper bracket off, but I have to ask; are you sure you cant pull the tank back just enough to pull it up? If you pull its hinge bolt out and keep the bars full left (or right) then apply backward pressure to the tank, I would think it would clear. Also, the bracket that is used to fasten the front of the tank to the frame (what is making contact) should flex a little which may help. If that does not work, get ahold of the installation instructions (maybe online if you don't have them) for the damper and go from there.
