here (some pics are copied from the detent spring how to)
this is what it looks like with the cover off.
and for me it was the shift shaft assembly that chipped (when i pulled the cover off, the shift shaft assembly came with it--so you see the shaft and cover together in the following two pics).
whichever it may be, the source of your problem will be lying at the bottom of the casing. if there isn't a spring, or metal chip in the bottom, pull the shaft out (just literally grab the shaft and pull...very easy) and check that nothing spins freely meaning it will move but will stop either by the spring or the stopper or both. there are two main components on the shift shaft assembly, one of them is a long spring from the shaft that will be there and the other is on the lower right part of the assembly, and that is a component that should not be able to spin freely. meaning it should have resistance from both the spring tensioner and also a stopper.
for instance, mine should not be able to move this far
and no when you open it up, there will be a drip or two of oil in there no more, nothing will spill out all over the place. also the hardest part was getting the cover off. there are three little places where you can get your "fingers" in there to pull it off. this was very hard for me and i ended up getting a long allen "L" wrench and using it as leverage to pry it off.
