Default How-to: 06 R6 GP Shift

1. Remove Mid Fairing (4 allen fairing bolts and one pop rivet).

2. Remove bolt from shifter arm using a 10mm wrench. (Note that dot on shifter arm lines up with central line going across shift shaft).

3. Unbolt shifter from kickstand using 8 mm allen wrench.

4. Rotate shifter arm so it is now on the opposite side of the shift shaft (line up dot with line going across shift shaft).

5. Reinstall bolt in shifter arm and tighten using 10mm wrench.

6. Reinstall bolt into kickstand (also apply blue loctite) using allen wrench.

7. Reinstall Mid Fairing (4 allen fairing bolts and one pop rivet).

You have thus successfully converted your 06 R6 from standard shift pattern (1 down, 5 up) to a GP shift pattern (1 up, 5 down).

Difficulty: EASY
Time involved: 10-15 minutes
Tools needed: 10 mm wrench and allen wrench (8 mm and 4.5 mm), Blue Loctite

It is my understanding that you can leave the bolt in the kickstand and just swap the shift arm around to the opposite side....but I chose to unbolt it. FYI.

Just another noe you may want to make. On the bolt buy the end of the mid fairing you should put a small spacer to keep the platics from hitting the rod.

On mine, the foam padding is right there and keeps it from coming close to the mid.

I'll keep an eye on it though.

Just out of curiousity, why would one do this? Any advantages?

Personal preference. Some like to be able to push down to upshift, especially while leaning the bike over...

I am very use to the GP shift, on my 05 R6 I had it for a while and I just got the 06 R6 no more then a few days ago, and I get kinda confused if I don't think about it. I am going to convert this one to GP for sure. But again its just personal prefference. Although stomping down through the gears it is less likely to miss shift.

Kickass post, dude! I've been interested in trying out the GP-style shift pattern, but I didn't realize it was that easy to make the change.

I'll definitely be giving this a try soon. Thanks for the how-to!!
