just got done replacing my stator cover on my 03. this is a great write-up blueblur. though this is easy to do for the average wrencher, I made one minor mistake when installing the new cover. I did not replace the little metal bracket inside that holds the wire(s) in correctly. I did not install it over the little tab inside the new cover, this resulted in the bracket grinding on the stator rotor when I installed everything. it took me 30 min scratching my head trying to figure this out. I noticed a couple of small grooves on the rotor, and that's what tipped me off to the awful noise coming from the stator. After I fixed that, everything was great. so just a helpful warning to those about to do their's.

If you have dropped your bike and put a hole in that case, before replacing you need to , flush engine fully with special engine flushing solution(in the hope of getting the missing metal bits out)

Then remove complete bottom section of engine, and look manually for pieces of metal(lucky i did, cos i found a bit!)

Obviously you will need new gasket when putting back on

Dont be fooled by wrong advise that a little bit of alluminium in the bottom end wont hurt, imagine the speed everything is going round down there at 80mph, and a bit of metal gets in the way! SEIZURE!

Dont take the risk

I just replaced my stator cover this weekend and there were no Torx bolts inside the cover of my 2001 R6. Instead, there were 3 5mm Allen bolts and a 3X6 Phillips head screw holding on the stator cover wire anchor thing. FYI the screw needed to be removed using an impact driver so you might want to have one of those handy.

Also, when I removed the cover, about a quart of oil spilled out. So watch out for that too.

Otherwise, yeah, this post is right on!

umm, lil bit of a prob/question. i did this entire procedure about a week ago prior to reading this. when i downed my 6 and cracked the case i assumed all the oil leake out b/c it seamed like a lot. after replacing the case i poured the required 4 quarts of oil into the engine and have been riding since then w/out problem. did i screw up and put too much oil into my engine? everyone is talking about how they only lost about a quart or less when removing the the case. so is a quart all i lost in the wreck? the oil didnt overflow or anything but this seems kinda odd. what should i do?

You should have changed your oil as a matter of course, incase any shaved metal or debris got into the engine.

As it stands you have no idea how much oil is in the engine and that is a BAD thing.

If I were you I wouldn't even turn the engine over. I would change the oil and filter and pray that no damage has been done.

since all you do when you change the oil is empty out the old and replace with new i assumed that I was ok to just put the new oil in since the old was already out. ...i know, rookie mistake. thanks for the advice though. greatly appreciated
