I just finished replacing mine and I have a few tips as well. The torx is a T27 and if you plan to remove the stator as well, the wire is much easier to get to if you prop the tank up. Of the wires there are two which have yellow tinted connectors. Its the one which has 3 white wires going into either end.

Good write up by the way! ;)

I know this might sound stupid but when I did this I don't even remember needing a Torx bit, seriously.

Anyways, I believe you about your gasket problems, but when I did it I didn't use the OEM gasket.

I simply used a super-high temp silicone gasket maker.

I did it at the end of last riding season and probably put on about 1000 or more miles after I put the cover back on and had no problems.

It probably is safer to use OEM gasket but if you get some good silicone gasket maker, and do it right and let it sit it for over 24 hours it should work..... Not sure what happened to you possibly could have been some oil residue on there when you put the gasket maker on.

I did it this way because the weather was too great and no dealer in my area had the Gasket. It would have taken probably a week to get it to me. Using the gasket maker it will take about a day.

It's definately a T30. I had to head out and buy a new bit after I got the cover off, 'cause the T27 kept slipping.

Good write up, though. I wish I'd seen it earlier...man was I surprised after getting the cover off.

Another tip is to make sure you scrape off any remaining gasket material that is left over after removing the stator cover. A new gasket doesn't seal very well if it doesn't have a flat surface to work with.

Very good write up. I just got through changing the cover. I would recommend that you should do this when you're about to do an oil change. Right when I took the cover off, a lot of oil started to spill out.

Also just like koolaidy said, it makes it much easier if you unplug the wire first. Just remove the two tank bolts and unclip.

Becareful when you loosen up the bolts, I managed to strip one of the heads of the bolts. I took it down to the dealer and they got it off for me for 5 bucks lol. Other then that it's pretty simple, just remember to replace the gasket as well.

Hahaha I wish I had saw this write up before I opened up my stator cover TODAY...i just made a thread in the technical forum...

Those torx screws are WELDED SHUT in there...i don't know how you guys take it out, i had oil all over my hands, no grip, and i was impossible to remove the screws...i had no idea they were there, I just figure, open the engine cover, let oil squirt at me, then replace the cover and off i go....but to my surprise...it took me half a day to try and figure out how to get the screws out...finally i gave up like a bitch and took the thing to my gas station, which was like 1/2 mile away..paid the guy 5 bucks and he loosen the screws for me....he was having trouble too...cussing and screaming every time..."who the fuck put this shit on" etc...LOL couldn't stop laughing...

Oh btw, the torx bit size is T30, but don't bother....they're not gonna come out, you will either hurt yourself, or strip the screw....just take the whle thing to your gas station and you will have a happier day than me...

They can take out the torx screw for you...when you change yours you will see how tight Yamaha put those suckers in there...i think everyone in here can tell you that....

Mine was just impossible to take out, cuz you will have oil dripping and likely will get on your hands....you will have no grip, and will end up stripping the screws..

This was a great article, just replaced a rashed ass stator cover with a new one.

I scraped the gasket material off of the bike and I used a sticky gasket sealer on the new gasket. It's holding great!
