Post How To: Change and Flush your coolant 99-02

Ok Guys, I know there was one with pictures and I could not find it....someone said it was deleted so I decided to make a new one.

This is just a suggestion but it helps........DO THIS WITH AN OIL CHANGE....Makes it worth taking the fairings off.

First you need to take the radiator cap off....to do that you need to do a few things first.

1) Remove the air duct cover from the right side.

2) Remove the clamp holding the rubber hose on the Intake duct and move it out of the way.

3) Remove the radiator cap

4) With the lower fairings removed look for the water pump...looks like this.....

5) look for the drain bolt.....located at the bottom of the water pump.

6) Drain the coolant into a container.....caution it will shoot out about a foot to a foot and a half.

7) install the drain bolt and fill the radiator with soft or distilled water (this is coming straight from the service manual) I used the water from a culligan machine.

8) Pull the drain bolt again and drain into the same container provided that you have enough room.

9) perform steps 7 & 8 over and over until the water coming out of the drain hole is clear.

10) Install the drain bolt, fill the radiator and install the cap. Start bike and let run for 2-5 mins.

11) Drain radiator again to verify water coming out is still clear.

12) Let drain until all the water is out, lift hoses up to drain out water...you have to get above the lowest point in the coolant system.....the drain plug.

13) Install drain plug, torque down. Fill with whatever coolant you intend to use. (I used engine Ice for the performance aspect)

14) Ensure radiator is full and replace cap, start bike and let run for a min.....then shut off.

15) Remove cap and ensure the same level is still in the radiator....no air bubbles were in the system.

16) Replace cap, replace rubber hose connecting air intake duct, and put clamp back in place, replace air duct cover.

IF oil change is done then replace fairings and all bolt in fairings.

Take out for a ride......

This job is a 3 beer job....just for the amount of time spent.....

Extra items to make the job easier......Oil filler...the item on top of the Engine Ice bottle...bought fro Advance Auto parts for $3.85...fits into the radiator and you can control to flow so you do not spill any coolant....

sorry this has nothing to do with the write up but how did you do that rear seat with the stripe? did you re wrap the leather with something custom?

This is exactly what I was looking for a month ago haha! It's a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. My boyfriend and friend were jealous...it was a little harder for them on their Superhawk and SV650.

Here are a couple things I learned: If you have small hands, you don't have to take the air duct off. When you take the drain bolt off, the coolant shoots WAY farther than I thought it was going to haha...be prepared with a large catch container. I just left the drain plug out when flushing with water until it comes out clear, then poured in anti-freeze until it started coming out green and then put the drain plug in and filled it up.

Have fun and good luck ;)

yes you have to dump it too, and make sure you fill it as well when you are done filling the radiator.

when you warm the bike up, check the reservoir, the radiator will take fluid from there if it is low. if thats still full then your good to go.
