Talking Midpipe Install *NOW WITH VIDS*

This install is probably 10 times more difficult than installing a damper. Took me a good amount of hours. But the final product is well worth it .

Recommended Things:
Grinder
sawzall
allen wrenches
ratchets
wrenches
rear stand
O2 sensor socket or a small regular wrench
other misc things i can't think of...

1. Remove mids and lower fairings... Disconnect turn signals..

2. Get ready to remove this thing V

3. Unbolt the slipon first. One bolt attached to right rearset, and remove the black shield covering the clamp.

4. Unbolt the header from the motor. 12mm nuts are holding it on, a little more than hand tight from factory, so its pretty easy to unbolt them, its just difficult getting to them. I used and extended socket, and a small wrench. Use your nugget to get them off. After that, there's only 2 bolts keeping the exhaust attached. One on each side sorta behind the rearsets, allen wrench needed. Once unbolted it should look like this....

5. Don't loose you're gaskets from your headers...

6. Next you're gonna cut that big fat box off the header using a sawzall if you're lucky or a hacksaw if you're Not.

7. NOW, time to grind the ends down. This just makes them smoother and kinda shrinks the diameter of the pipes, so they'll fit nicely into the midpipe.
GET A GRINDER!!!

Test fit the midpipe onto the header to make sure it fits nice and snuggly

8. Welcome to Hell.
Time to remove the Infamous 'honeycombs.' Prior to this, i thought they were like some thin little filter or some crap that wouldnt be to much of a problem to remove....was i wrong.

AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhh

The honeycomb actually extends further than you would like it to

For this, my bro and i used a high power drill to get out the majority of the mess, then we used a hammer and chisel. Then i sat outside and beat it out by myself best i could .

JUST TRY TO MAKE IT AS SMOOTH AS POSSIBLE AND MAKE SURE THERE ARE NOOOOO LOOSE PIECES REMAINING, UNLESS YOU WANNA RISK HAVING YOUR MOTOR SUCK IT UP AND DIE.

9. After you regain your senses, it's time to mock everything up. Start by putting the header back on with or without the midpipe attached, making sure to put the header gaskets back in their places. Then slide the midpipe on, followed by the slipon. My midpipe did not line up with the old exhaust mounting tab, so i tightened the header handtight first, then tightened the slipon, and then the brackets on the midpipe.

wouldnt line up

Make sure to angle the brackets inwards, or else your lower fairings wont fit. I learned that one first hand

10. I was filthy and full of anticipation by this step. So disregard your dirtiness and put everything back on the way its supposed to be and dont forget to hook up the O2 sensor.

11. Dont be afraid to start it up, it'll be awesome, unless you suck at putting stuff together

ENJOY!

(ps if you like to ride fast like yours truly, consider investing in a earplug for your right ear ) (but only when you're going fast )

Cheers Kerry!
Glad to say it looks complicated as all hell! Well not really just time consuming...

So whats the deal with that plate on the mid pipe not lining up? Will it be secure enough?

Thanks for the write up, it should make things a bit easier. Time to invest in a grinder.

Yea, surprisingly enough the exhaust is plenty sturdy with only the header bolts tightened, the midpipe brackets tightened, and the slipon bolt and clamp tightened. Tried moving it, and it didnt budge. You'll see the midpipe shaves a couple pounds/kilos <-- off the weight of the exhaust, so the other mounting holes are unnecessary.

Wow Kerry, you're the man
That is way harder than i thought, and i'm surprised the aligning bracket is so far off. Doesnt matter though, i'm running the little Akrapovic slip on, so I doubt it will need the mounting point.

Well done son

hey thanks. You shouldnt need that one mounting point, because like i said, the exhaust without the big ass cat box is a lot lighter, so just tightening everything else stabilizes the entire exhaust. I was considering the akra slipon to, do you know if they make the slipon in carbon fibre?

For the amount of money you paid for that you would think the mounting point would atleast fit right.

Otherwise looks pretty good...you spray paint your pipe or what?

Yeah Akrapovic make 3 slip ons for our bike: two of the 'hex canister' ones that look similar to the can on the full system except smaller, and the megaphone slip on. I've got the megaphone on mine.
To answer your question, the two hex ones, one is stainless and the other Carbon Fibre.

Another thing; now that you've gutted your honeycomb crap and put the midpipe on, is the bike ridiculously loud now? As in, can't fire the bike up too early or late for fear of angry mob loud? With the tiny unmuffled megaphone pipe and a midpipe my bike will be pretty much like a straight pipe out of the engine with no muffling. Made me think twice...
