Default Accidental Over Rev

I went to race someone on the street today and I thought I had room for a downshift to get me into the optimal rpm range (hopefully getting me to around 13k), however, it took me in the 15k range and when I punched it, it slammed against the rev limiter (16.5k) and I hurried to shift up. This is my first time hitting the rev limiter and I have learned from my noobish mistake. My question is: does it hurt to hit the rev limiter whether its all the time or just once in a blue moon? Does it depend on how long it is hitting it for, or can you sit there and let it just keep bouncing? I see moto gp racers constantly bounce off the rev limiter in between corners, however, their bikes are setup much different. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

your fine. was the engine warm already? im assuming so.

just dont be like the **** who sit at lights and show off their small balls by revving it to the limiter. thats not cool.

friend of mine at the last trackday did that, except he was already in peak rpm. bike went to 19k and shut off. so if the bike doesn't like what your doing, it will let you know promptly.

your fine dude.

during a trackday i redline mine prolly 20-20 times, lol redline is just a spot where you can go to, and go farther and then its not the best idea...

on the 06 max power is around 14,500, so im usually shifting by 15K, but sometimes itll run over that b4 i notice it

Thanks for the posts guys.

Natedogg, I have always wondered about that, if the bike would even let you downshift if it knew you were gonna be over redline... apparently so. Pretty cool though that it shut itself off instead of blowing the engine (hopefully it started back again).

Only other question I have is:
Is there an actual rev limiter, not a redline, but a limiter. What I mean by this is if I had not shifted up right away, would it have just sat at a certain rpm bouncing due to the limiter, or would it have let me go on up until eventually the bike shut off?

Oh and natedogg, don't worry, I'm not a f@g who sits at the light and constantly revs it to its max. I'm not sure if people like that truly think its cool.

this guys bike apparently the forces were so strong, since he was already at redline when he accidentally downshifted that it went right past the rev limiter to the end of the tach reading and shut off. he just started it back up and it was fine.

but if you are just accelerating to the redline then yes there is a limiter that it will bounce off of. really the only way to go past it is if you do what my friend did above.

The bike is not performing if you're not hitting the rev limiter a few times.

^you should be shifting around a thousand rpms below redline FYI. or take your bike to a dyno, look at the data and when the power starts to drop off, note the rpm that it drops at and be sure to remember to shift there. if you go beyond that point your just wasting time.

^yea, i have an o6 R6 and i have a pipe and a power commander on it and when i took it to get tuned the dyno said that the peak power was at 16.2 RPM so i set the shift light to about 16.5... works great!
