Default Enlighten me

I'm new to the R6 and just picked up a 2000. Any issues with these bikes that I should know about? I have heard some stuff about a 2nd gear issue but don't know what thats all about. Just a few pointers on things to look out for with that year would be a real help.

find an open road. accelerate wide open throttle in second gear. if it stutters or "hiccups" you got the classic second gear problem. many have changed it, others just live with it (like me). you'll soon know when exactly it occurs and also learn to enjoy third gear a lot more

also keep an eye out for the front sprocket. sometimes its been known to jump off, very rare but always good to check from time to time.

check your valve clearance as well. normal routine maintenance really.

Cool

Im new to the sport - have an 01 R6

i have the 2nd gear problem

ive just learned to deal with it .... talked to some friends
about it and my boyfriend who rides .... they say its a little
common to stick.
Heard of someone that has an 08 R1 and has the same problem.

It doesnt happen "all" the time ... but every once in a while.

Other than that i have had no problems (been riding it since
March) got it with 9000 miles on it.

yup for the college kid budget i am just dealing with the second gear problem. although its only 300 in parts and i will do the labor myself (really not that hard...)

also it helps to switch to GP shift. if you already have it, it wont make the problem go away but will decrease the risk of it getting worse. GP shifting allows for cleaner, better for the tranny shifts.

but for the most part if your following me and im on it hard you will hear me short shift from second into third

Whats GP shifting ?

If its left the way it is ... is the long range effect
that bad that i should look into getting the GP done ?

no you should be fine with normal shifting.

gp shifting is reversing the shifting pattern. so its 1 UP and 5 down instead of the usual 1 down and 5 up.

ever notice sometimes you think you don't get into gear or actually miss a shift with normal? well with gp it never happens. since your pushing down to upshift, you have more force going into the shift resulting in truer shifts.

gp-shift...one of the best things I have ever done to my motorcycle. Haven't miss-shifted in over 4yrs.

Welcome to Tucson !

Np ... theres a local forum you should check out, people from
all areas of Tucson. Most are from the central area ... but theres a
guy that lives in saughrita and some from NW side, some from i think its called sandario ? far out there i guess.

Tucsonsportbikes.org

They have bike nights and are pretty cool people, this
way you can meet new people to ride with. h
